« on: September 30, 2016, 08:43:25 AM »

Went there today to pick up a couple things,  apparently they've gone out of business!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Domestic hot water
« on: March 18, 2016, 03:13:40 PM »
Having an issue with hot water. It seems it's never real hot but it is hotter sometimes more than other times. I think when we don't use it real often then when we do use it it is not very hot. Wondering if it would be losing heat sitting in the water heater. Anyone have that happen?

    I have a Hawkin Energy 1100
Domestic cold water comes in, enters top side of 30 plate w-w heat exchanger exits bottom from there it enters cold side of water heater exits hot side then into mixer valve and on through the house.   Mixer is set at hottest setting.

Any thoughts?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Aquastat
« on: October 18, 2015, 10:12:41 AM »
My aquastat is set for 160-180. But late last season and now a couple times this season it will allow the fire to reach 200 or so.

Time for a new aquastat or is it something else?

Fire Wood / leaning tree

I have a box elder about 10" dia. that's growing at about a 45° angel. How do I go about cutting it down? Would you make a relief cut ( won't the weight immediately pinch the saw)? Or just cut it without relief cut or notch?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / creosote build up
« on: May 27, 2014, 05:01:07 PM »
So its time to clean the fire box, what's the best way to remove the stubborn creosote build up? Stiff putty knife, paint scraper and wire brush gets some of it but what about the really hard build ups? Hate to take a hammer and chisel but....

Is there some way you can maybe soften it ?  What's your best solution?

Equipment / log splitter

Just fired up my two year old Huskee 22 ton and split a piece of wood and the cilynder won't retract. Any ideas what the problem is? Everything was normal up to this point
Didn't try to extend it too far or anything and had just serviced the engine and filled the res.  with hyd. fluid.

Electronics / 220 to 110 motor. Oops
« on: April 24, 2014, 03:07:01 PM »
Accidently hooked 220 line to my well pump without checking to see if the motor was wired for it.  It wasn't!  It tried to run for a second then stopped
I rewired the motor for 220 and it didn't work, changed the motor back to 110 and hooked it up to a 110 circuit and it humms for a few seconds before it trips the breaker.

Is it probably a sure thing I fried the motor?

Equipment / chain saw bars
« on: September 23, 2013, 06:32:07 PM »
I have a Husky saw and the original bar (18) was rather narrow and had a narrow tip.  Had the shop put a new bar on for me and they replaced the original with an Oregon that  was wider and had a more rounded tip.   Is there a specific function for each type.   I think I liked the original better, I seem to get a lot of kickback with the more rounded nose.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / water to water plate exchanger
« on: February 06, 2013, 05:12:29 PM »
Explain how they work.    It seem to me water from the boiler enters the house runs thru one side of the plate exchanger and on to whereever it goes from there.   In the mean time domestic hot water runs from the house water inlet thru the other side of the exchanger and into the existing water heater.   Then that water sits in the water heater until you turn the hot water tap on and the water you first get thru the tap is the water that's been sitting for how ever long in the water heater.   So, the domestic water you get  from heating it with the boiler is not consistent in temp. it all depends on how long it's been sitting in the water heater.    The longer it sits without being used the less hot it is.  As you draw water from the water heater more water passes thru the exchanger, heats up as it passes thru and enters the water heater.

This doesn't seem llike it's right to me so please explain to me how it works if this is wrong.                                                                                                                          thanks

Fire Wood / seasoned firewood
« on: January 10, 2013, 06:32:22 PM »
I live in midwest Michigan where winters are a mere tease of what they used to be.   My question is ...... will cut firewood  dry throughout the winter months or does the moisture in the wood just freeze until warmer weather?
