creosote build up
« on: May 27, 2014, 05:01:07 PM »

So its time to clean the fire box, what's the best way to remove the stubborn creosote build up? Stiff putty knife, paint scraper and wire brush gets some of it but what about the really hard build ups? Hate to take a hammer and chisel but....

Is there some way you can maybe soften it ?  What's your best solution?

Yes, at the end of the season when you still have some hot coals I leave the door open and stir the coals around. They will burn the creosote and those tuff built up places to ash..

Burn it and clean it with a propane weed burner.

Ive had mine shut down for a couple months now. Would it be bad to load a pile of cardboard in it and get a hot fire like that? Meaning would it do anything to the steel putting that much heat to it that quick?

Dave - I have the same concern.  Finally getting around to clean mine after 3 weeks of being shut down.  I have a remodeling job going on in my home and I have a huge pile of old wood lathe that would work great to get a HOT fire going.  I'm just concerned about too much heat too fast.  Roger
