General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Bl owners

Does P&M make spacers for the 2840 with the wider bricks? I have raked the bricks around but have moved the ones in the back closed. I am not worried about it right now but it did seem to work better with them evenly spaced. I was going to make something come summer after i shut it down for the year.

Portage & Main / Re: set temp and differential on the BL series

Does anyone notice going thru more wood with the higher temps? I am a rookie so I don't know much. I have been running at 180 with 10 dif when colder (0 or under at night) and then set at 185 when a little warmer,  then 190 when temps get up in the 40's daytime.

I had dead elm stolen from my back fence line that was 400' off the road. I was letting them stand till I had time to clean them up for my P&M I installed this year. At least they were courteous and cleaned up the brush out of the field.

Plumbing / Watts pressure-temp gauge
« on: December 02, 2014, 06:53:38 AM »
Is there an adjustment that I need to do on my gauges to have them read correctly? I have them on the back of my PM 2840 on supply & return lines via 1" by 3/4" tee with a 1/2" adapter. The boiler is set to 185 and it reads about 170 right off the pump, went and bought a Nibco strap-on gauge and it reads 150 on the copper by the watts gauge (not a fan of these). I would think my thermostat is good on the boiler, everything else on this dragon seems real nice.  I would really like to know what my loss is but I don't trust my gauges.

I like to store them in my fingers, pants, and jacket for later on when I need something to complain about, because cutting them up is quite satisfying.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / creosote
« on: November 21, 2014, 08:15:21 AM »
has anyone heard of using a little bit of barn lime (spoonful or so) in your owb to combat creosote? I have a new p&m 2840 burning 22-25% moisture hardwood so I get slight creosote on water jacket walls better now with 190 with 10 dif. I have a buddy that has a cb that is about 5 years old and he was told by the dealer to thro I bit in, he would also sell him the cb stuff to combat it but lime is pretty much the same thing so he does that and thinks it helps. wondering what this would do if anything? I am new at all of this but this site and everyone on here has been a great help.

I have not been able to kick the tires yet so a better question might be do these units come with a wire brush to clean the bypass or is it a standard size to buy one over the counter? dave was supposed to be at wisconsin farm show but was a no show when I was there but I hope to check this baby out more at another show the end of april. by the way what is that incentive for letting dave or corporate know about this site? side question, with two small kids that like to help me and I like to keep them involved, does the outside door get hot or warm or is it more kid friendly

Portage & Main / Fire Brick

Has anybody had to replace the refractory brick on the inside of a 2840? How long have they had this design. I am really interested in this model and thinking in the distant future that you won't be able to find them. Are there any videos of cleaning? It looks easy enough they should put that on their website.

REALLY GREAT INFO ON HERE. if it matters I am in ne wisconsin. cb dealers like starbucks in seatle round here. they have good simple design but I think I can get more for my money! not that price is a big factor but the p&m is about $1000 more than heatmaster, guess that's about $1 a pound huh.

I had a 5000e all but picked out then I keep reading all the info out there for both heatmaster & p&m 2840 now I am not so sure. I am not afraid of the ss in heatmaster (been using it long time on my maple evaporator at higher temps). I know dealers make big difference  but both seem decent to work with heatmaster  hour away and p&m on other side of state about 6 hours. any good points where they are truly different, where one excels over the other. I do not want a word war over stainless vs mild (although mild I could weld if it ever fails haha).

Plumbing / newbie dhw question
« on: March 10, 2014, 12:45:06 PM »
in cb brochure they have the owb plumbed to dhw first than to the forced air furnace than back to owb. is this a good way to go, does it matter? to me it would go to forced air furnace first allowing greatest heat exchange where it is needed most, but I am new to this and will be doing this this next summer.
