I had a 5000e all but picked out then I keep reading all the info out there for both heatmaster & p&m 2840 now I am not so sure. I am not afraid of the ss in heatmaster (been using it long time on my maple evaporator at higher temps). I know dealers make big difference  but both seem decent to work with heatmaster  hour away and p&m on other side of state about 6 hours. any good points where they are truly different, where one excels over the other. I do not want a word war over stainless vs mild (although mild I could weld if it ever fails haha).

Both good choices,  comes down to preference.

You can weld 409 just as easy as mild steel tho if your worried about that..

This is a choice that you and you alone will need to make, how far are you from Scott, if I were in your shoes that would be a big deciding factor, some dealers are just that,dealers, I think that Scott, myself, Yoder and a few others on here are a bit more involved than the average dealer, regardless of the decision that you make, we will be there to help am I right Scott?

Yep, I think both of his options are good it just comes down to preference as I believe both units have proven themselves

Hey Scott,,,, I'm curious.  Do you know exactly what type of welding rod metal is used to weld 409 stainless steel together on a Heatmaster?

I was looking at acceptable welding rod materials on Azom (with regards to welding 409 stainless)

Personally, I wouldn't go by how close the dealer is to you but rather how good the dealer is that you buy from.  I just bought a Heatmaster from Scott (going to be delivered tonight) and I am not one bit worried that he is 450 miles from me.  It all depends on how dedicated your dealer is to what they do.  As far as Scott, Slim, Yoder and RSI go, this is what they do for a living.  They will be there (maybe not physically) if/when you have issues with your stove.  Buy what you feel is the right choice.  I don't think you can go wrong with either of your choices.  Good luck!

REALLY GREAT INFO ON HERE. if it matters I am in ne wisconsin. cb dealers like starbucks in seatle round here. they have good simple design but I think I can get more for my money! not that price is a big factor but the p&m is about $1000 more than heatmaster, guess that's about $1 a pound huh.

409R is a great filler rod, but mild steel wire will also work, I've not had to do it to any of my stoves but have seen it welded with regular wire in similar applications without issue but technically it is better to use the 409R

Yep, it will corrode as will mild steel.  If the customer continues to use the water treatment should he have a leak,  should still be fine

I'm not saying it's as good folks, just saying in a pinch it will work
