Equipment / Flat tires
« on: February 02, 2015, 06:28:00 PM »
My cuttin buddies skid steer has two flat front tires. It has rubber tracks over the tires. His track-stretching tool is broke. We could get the tire off, but if we did we couldn't get it back on. We tried straps, we made a few attempts of ether but no luck. Looking for any suggestions. Maybe it is just a case of MORE ETHER!

I've had some ash-crust blockage develop a few times. Not sure what type of wood caused it, I have all my wood mixed, and burn about every kind. I try to let mine burn down every couple days. Stir the coals with a scraper or hoe and let it burn for a couple hours before you load it again.

They are a little chincy. All you can do is find a bigger, stronger hinge system and some self tappers. It definitely should have been better from the factory.

Don't run him off for having a bad day. It happens. This thread will be a good learning tool for everyone by the time the story is over.
If your losing a gallon or 2 per month, it could be leaking from the clamps. Only 1 way to find out.

Another problem will be getting the water out of the tile. You say it is running down towards your boiler. Assuming the pipe turns up to your boiler, that water is trapped in there. I suppose it may evaporate over time.
You're gonna have to dig a pretty big hole to address your splice. Whatever you decide to fix it with, you will have to wrap all the way around the tile. We use some bad-ass sticky rubber for flat roofs called Flint-Tastic.  $100 for a roll.  If you were closer I would give you some.

Underground splice is not a good idea. It can be done but should be avoided.

Don't blame a good dealer for not knowing what your situation is. You put in an order, he ships it out.  If you asked him about splicing it, I'm sure he would have advised against it.

Sorry to hear it has happened.  Get your shovel warmed up.

Fire Wood / Re: would it be worth it?

Definitely worth it!!  Some better than others, but it all burns. Worst that can happen is you throw a couple more pieces in.

A face cord will fit in a pickup truck pretty easy.

You might wanna figure that property line issue out. My dad lost a couple acres over something like that. The place where he grew up in Tennessee. He chased old surveys down but the new surveyors couldn't find the old landmarks. BIG dispute and didn't go in our favor.

They tried to tell me a 2840 would work for me. I had already decided to go bigger and glad I did. Only heating 1800sf now, 800sf addition in the works. I am a little concerned for when I get that opened up. I can get up to 14 hrs on a pretty good load.  I'd rather be  a little big than have to feed it every 8 hrs.

Depends on the wind. Mine is only a ft. thru my roof and the peak is 5ft. higher. If the wind blows from the south, the smoke rolls over the peak  and pushes down towards the ground.   Prevailing wind, it works just fine.

I wish mine had a multi speed fan.

My wife thinks the wood smoke smells like a skunk.   Or, maybe something else is burning.

Big firebox is ok. I had a 60" firebox. I was cutting 6"-8" limbs at 4'-5' long. I stack them to a point and make it thru the night. Had a bunch that were a little too long. I cut them in half, 2'-3' and made the same stack, but half deep, and was getting the same burn time. That firebox had a ripple top with a baffle in the back to hold heat. So anything behind the baffle would go straight out the stack.

As far as ashes go. It wasn't bad raking and shoveling the big firebox.
