It sounds like you've learned from your mistakes.  It's too bad that the previous owner didn't care of the old unit, it may have lasted longer if he had.  And, one cannot argue with quality underground pipe.  Granted it's pricey but it so worth it.  Good luck with your new 750.  I been meaning to ask, does it have the solenoids or stepper motors that open and close the flap over the elbow opening?  Roger

Central Boiler / Re: E1450 Blower Motor Replacement
« on: November 12, 2019, 03:11:11 AM »
This is the second year in a row I've had to replace the blower motor for the season.  There doesn't appear to be any lubrication ports on the blower, yet the bearings / motor keep seizing up.  Has anyone else experienced issues with the blower?  The original blower lasted only 5-6 years, replaced it last year, and again this year.  The blowers worked at the end of the heating season, but wouldn't start up.  I will be removing the blower and storing it inside next year if I can't figure out what's going on.  Each blower costs $180, so I can't afford to keep replacing them.  If anyone knows where I can get a comparable motor for cheaper, please let me know.

Does the manual show if there are any oil ports?  My manual shows me where to look for the oil ports on my Classic Titanium Edge 550 HD blow motor.  Can your dealer offer any insight into the cause of the problem?  Roger

Just wanted to check in with others to see if this is something you have noticed too or not.  On my CB Classic Edge 750 HD, I've noticed that when I use the scraper tool on the interior of the door and the frame that the door sets into, some of the flat black paint has been peeling/scraping off along with burn residue.  Is this something I should be worried about?  I figure come summer I'll re-paint it with some high-temperature flat black to avoid corrosion, but since it started happening the first time I scraped the door I figure I should check in.  Is this what the rest of you have typically seen?

Thanks!

That's nothing to worry about.  In the spring I simply coat it with a heavy coat of NEW motor oil as I do with the firebox.  I've never painted mine, but if that's what you want to do, go for it.  Roger

Probably a switching power supply. They don't respond too well to dirty power. Did you have any other damage from this power glitch?
It makes me wonder if there was a neutral lost somewhere in the shuffle.   Anyway glad you had a backup till you could get the part!

Wt

The only issue with the power surge was 2 circuit breakers had tripped, noting else damaged...thankfully.  I'm saving for a surge protector.  I know they won't protect my electronics from all surges but perhaps it'll save me more money in the long run.  The only issue I had with my dealer is he charged me $70.00 for a power supply that I can get online for approximately 1/3 the price.  It is made by Delta Electronics.  I'll be ordering one to have on hand for the "just in case" scenario.

The new power supply arrived this morning.  I left work to get it from my dealer.  I installed it as soon as I got home and , walla, power is restored.  I made fire and heating the house and DHW with the OWB.  Feels good to have the heat come on and not hear the oil burner running.  I must add that CB made it easy for the home owner change parts.  Roger

So I fired up the 750HD yesterday.  All went fine on the cold start, adding heat load, and the first few cycles, but the fire went out overnight after maybe 4 cycles.  My home internet was also down so I unfortunately can't refer back to the firestar graphs and logged data to say exactly what happened, but my feeling is operator error and too little of a coal bed.  Checked on it and I have a fair chunk of charred wood in there with hardly any ash remaining at the bottom of the firebox.

I'm going to file this one as operator error.  I went too quickly from tiny kindling to mid-size logs and should have had a lot more coals in there before stepping up, and/or I need to decrease my idle pulse time from the 30 minutes where it is currently set.  Now just waiting for the rain to stop so I can pull the charred wood out without soaking it and re-light this thing.  While it was running, it was running great.

bjp - I'd tend to lean to the lack of a coal bed too.  I suspect you're right regarding the pulse setting.  On my Classic Edge 550 HD I have it set to run for 50 seconds every 10 minutes.  I've never lost a fire with those settings.  Also, be sure to use smaller size pieces to get the coal bed built up.  It can take time to get it there.  Whenever I fire mine up for the season I always start early in the morning on a weekend so I have the day to monitor it with the wifi or a visual inspection.  Good luck.  Roger

Yikes Roger

The idea of running the oil sucks. Are you going to drain it down or leave it? That storm had me worried so I shut the breaker at the house off until It was all over and the power was up and stable. Just started to run it 2 weeks ago, ran the water tests and all is well. 13 cord of wood and two bottles of Ashtrol this year. Hope to only use 7 of the 13 cord and have some for next year, 1.5 cord was left from last year.

Good luck and I hope you are up and running soon.

Hi Duramax - Yeah, it does suck but I guess it could have been worse.  CB made it easy to troubleshoot with their online troubleshooting guide as well as having the schematic printed on the access panel to where the pump is located.  It was simple to rule out this and that, no guess work.  No, I'm not draining it down, I kept the pump running to keep the water moving from the 550 to the house.  I turned off the wrap around pump in my house, I didn't feel I needed to heat the outdoor water with my oil supply.  Glad to know all is well the 1450.  I have 10 cord in my storage shed but I'll only use 5 1/2 to 6 cord of it.  I always put up more wood than I need for the "just in case" scenario.  That reminds me, I need to get more Ashtrol.

Thanks for the good wishes.  I'll keep everyone posted as soon as the new power supply is installed and I'm heating the house again with the OWB.

Take care and stay warm this winter.

Roger

Thanks.  Whatever blew and let the smoke out left a hole in the circuit board and a rather impressive burn mark on the protective cage surrounding it.  I'm guessing it was a capacitor, I've never seen a resistor do that before, seen them fry, but never blow a hole in the circuit board.  I'm looking into getting surge protection installed especially for the OWB.  Granted the power supply isn't that expensive (~$40.00) I just don't want to be in the position of shutting her down and having to wait a week for a part to arrive again.  Roger

Hey all, Around 3:15 this morning we experienced 3 power surges, the power failed a short time later and the emergency generator took over.  Following CB's online troubleshooting guide and following the schematic printed on the panel where the pump is located, I was able to confirm the power supply had indeed died.  From looking at the power supply I could see where a component had "exploded" and left a black smudge on the protective cage surrounding the power supply and a nice black smudge on the insulation too.  My dealer has a new one coming from CB.  It should be in mid-week next week.  Until then, I have to listen to the oil burner run.  I guess it could be worse.  Roger

HeatMaster / Re: Low water switch
« on: October 31, 2019, 05:56:51 PM »
I've wondered why the manufacturers don't have their dealers install the low water level switch when they are setting it up instead of shipping it already installed?  I think the ride aboard a train or truck causes some of them to break.  By having the dealer install it in the OWB at set up the switch would be protected and perhaps last longer.  Luckily for me when mine failed on the CB Edge 550 it was while it was still under warranty so it didn't cost me anything other than the few minutes it took me to change out the old for the new.  The new one is stainless steel so the chances of failure are much less.  Just my $0.02 worth.  Roger

Hello Roger
Have decided to stay with the 2400 for another year.  Yes at some point we will be down sizing, and like you, not sure I want to continue working up wood.  I was told that the State barn in Lincoln, has purchased and installed a Crown Royal 7400.  At some point I intend to visit and get there opinion as to quality and ease of operation.  As always thanks for your time and wisdom.  Trail Master

Do you know who's the dealer in NH, especially the further north you go?  I have to figure those who live in southern NH probably has a dealer in MA.  The only reason I stayed with CB was the dealer is only a 30 to 40 minute drive away.  Roger

Arrived today and confirmed Edge 750 Titanium with the stainless firebox, manufactured January 2019. My excavator guy didn't show so a bit delayed on getting it hooked up, but wow this thing looks good. Lots of reading to do, I'll get to know the pulse since that will be a new feature for me here.

I was answering another topic when I saw this one.  I am wondering how your Edge 750 HD is running for you, if you've put fire to it yet?

I noticed folks up datings boilers about 8 to 10 years old.  I have a CB e 2400 (8 seasons), any ideas what trade in or resale value would be.  My unit is in good condition, however looking at the Crown Royal 7300 E? I hope this question doesn't offend anyone, just kind of kicking the tires!!!!!

Trailmaster - I doubt you'll get any trade-in value at all.  If I was you I'd try to sell it outright.  I've heard great things about the Crown Royal line.  I really don't know how long they have been in the market place and I have no first hand experience with them, only what other's have mentioned.  This will probably be the last OWB I use to heat with.  I'll be retiring from my job in under 4 years and I'll be putting this old house on the market selling the OWB with it.  Once I retire I'll be doing some traveling and I don't want to be married to cutting, splitting and stacking firewood.  Roger

boilerman, I put fire in mine Saturday the 12th.  The nights were getting cooler and I was getting tired of hearing the oil burner running.  I had initially put fire in it the week before but I receiving an error message on my iPhone saying "Thermocouple failure".  I checked with my dealer, who has no idea how to test it, for a new one and he said he had one in stock for $150.00.  I found an online provider who has the same part just a bit over $100.00 and that included shipping.  It took 3 days for the TC to arrive, swapped out the faulty one for the new one and we're heating the house with the 550 now.  I have since learned that the thermocouple connections are susceptible to moisture.  All I needed to do was remove it, dry the connector and reinstall it.  Oh well, I have a spare in the event I need it.  Other than that, she's been operating great.  Roger
