Title: age
Post by: MD20/20 on December 04, 2012, 02:55:58 PM
Curious as to the average age of OWB owners.  I'm 51 and starting to think about how long I'll be able to feed the machine! 70 yrs old?

Hello, I'm 36 and just put one in 5 weeks ago.  For me it's all new and exciting and I realize that may wear off a bit or maybe not.  So far, I really enjoy walking out and "checking on the fire" some times whether it needs to be "checked" or not.  I could sit with the door open and watch the flames for a long time...  I just moved from a big city to a 150 acre farm and could not be happier!  I have spent the last 6 weekends out cutting wood and I really enjoy that.  I gotta think that alone is good excercise and may get me a few more years in the end!  We live in an old farm house and before we put int he owb I had to buy some oil and at alomst $4.00 a gallon that was not too much fun....  I have 50 gallons left and I hope I do not have to buy anymore for a long time...

The ultimate solution is invest in a pellet boiler..no work..Just dump the bags.. If you buy wood..It would be no different than buying pellets..Im 34..Got a lot of yrs  of doing wood which I do almost everyday..

53 here and on my 2nd year.  Cut enough wood last fall from the hurricane that I should have enough for 4 - 5 years, but plan on cutting some every year!  If you don't mind work - Go for it

54 This is my first year but used wood stoves for 29 years. My work is outside and physical. Lets say I feel my age every day.

I`ll be 52  on the 15th. I have been a carpenter for almost 30 years so the work of cutting wood is no big deal. Have had the OWB for about a month now. But cutting wood  is nothing new and I really enjoy getting out with a couple saws and a tractor.

I'm only 24 but cutting and splitting all day can get the best of me sometimes.  But the pain at the end of the day is worth the satisfaction I get by looking at my wood pile.  Hopefully ill have splitter soon so it won't wear me out so much.  But I'm young enough that I can wait a few more years.

I'm 35.  I was brought up a worker, though it takes a certain discipline to stay with it.  I enjoy working for myself.  How long do I want to be filling a wood boiler??  If it was just for my home I'd do it as long as my health allowed me.  I also heat 4 of my greenhouses and for 3 months I'm filling 2 OWBs up to 3 times a day burning about 2 cord a week.  So in total I burn around 35 to 40 cord per year and this is my 5th heating season.  It gets to be a workout to say the least.  I plan to stay with wood heat.  But I am seriously considering the P&M Chip Burner in a few years.

It's a contest between desire, time, age and competing interests, but I love fooling with my OWB!  I clean my property, have a mild work out, get rid of something I'd just ordinarily throw in a burn pile, and don't need to buy oil anymore.  Our minimum annual savings in fuel oil is $4,000.  I wish I had an OWB in my 20's!

I'm 57 and I love my Legend as much as anything I own. I know the day is coming when it's not going to be near as much fun as it is right now. My knees hurt alot. I have a friend that lives in Ohio that is C.B. dealer. He thinks I need a Maxim. Maybe he's right. Either that or a wood/coal boiler. I could mix it a little and not use near as much wood. I also have to keep in mind I live in Indiana so if I would stay with all wood it would (try saying that real fast) have to be a gasifier!

I'm 60 years old on my 5th year with my Empyre OWB. Just retired after 42 years in a steel mill so cutting wood is not  so much a chore when you have the time.  I enjoy every day now!

46 and on my third year.  We had an indoor wood furnace as a kid, this aint new to me.  Used to hate it, but now like getting to the woods and running the saw.  I still hate spliiting and stacking, but hate payments to someone else to heat the homestead even worse.  My step dad is 72 and we still cut together all the time.  I hope I hold out at least that long.  I hope to teach the 4 year old how cool the woods can be and how it can benefit her, just like grandpa did for me.

oldghenowth, very similar to you here. My dad is 83  and goes to the woods with me everytime. I also have a 4 year old (boy) that loves hanging out at the farm and going to the woods.

I am 26, first OWB.

Grew up with an indoor wood furnace and spent every summer helping my dad cut, split, and stack and then every day after school in the winter hauled a load or two of wood into the house.  Didn't mind the work and love the free heat!  My OWB was already here when i bought this house (although it needed a decent amount of work to be functional again) and was a big plus for me in my home purchase decision.  I will do it as long as I live here and am able : ).  If i move i will install another one if possible : )

I'm 28. This is my 2nd season with my OWB. But I guess for 28 years of my life I never remember not having wood heat. After living with it all my life its just life to me I've never known anything else. I remember before my grandpa passed away, him my uncle (dad to me) and myself all went to the woods together it was times like that in life I wouldnt trade for anything. But as grandpa got older he couldnt do as much but I was getting older and could help more. Now my uncle is getting to the age that he can still do it but he needs to pace himself and stop and rest some but the 12 year old grand son is getting to the point where he can help more. So as far as how long I'm gonna burn wood untill I die if I've taught my kids what I was taught.

36 here, 2nd season with my OWB and LOVE it!  I cut trees and sell wood on the side so its perfect for me.  I now have a place to get rid of unwanted pine for free (turning it into heat in my house makes me smile ear to ear) and all the uglies that comes from selling 60-70 cords a year.  I plan on doing it as long as my body holds out but as a back up plan, I know I can easily pick up more than enough pine cut and stacked along the road to keep it going.  Would just need to hire someone to load the truck for me as I drive around and scrounge.

37 sometimes I think how easy it would be to have a condo someplace, no wood to split, land to keep up with man I would have a lot of free time, I would probably go crazy. FYI I just picked up a allmand backhoe I am gonna dig a crap load of useless holes in the woods Saturday

49 and newbie to OWBs.   Just moved out to a place with some land and burned a fireplace insert last winter and although it cut my heating bills some I didn't like how the living room was nice and warm but the rest of the house was like a meat locker.   Plus the mess and smoke in the house and having to load the small firebox every few hours I thought it was time to do it right.  I also like cutting wood and have plenty of it as I am surrounded by woods.  But I may need to find some buddies who like to cut, split, and drink too as I will need to do more to keep up with the new beast...

I'm 42 and my dad is 69.  We both have Natures Comfort GT-220s.  My dad still cuts wood and is healthier now than when he didn't own one.  I think the idle time during the long winter months was wearing on him and depression was setting in.  He's had a wood boiler for the last 4 years and is in a lot better shape.
For me, i need the excercize during the winter months to keep off the fat!  I enjoy getting outside and cutting wood!

I'm 34 and have been involved with wood heat since I was 8-9 yrs old.

I bought a house with electric heat and was tired of paying for it.

I decided to buy a water stove and love every minute of it.
