Title: Hello
Post by: Airgap on January 05, 2011, 06:56:53 AM
Hi everyone, my name's Josh.  I just joined up, and I still can't believe there is a forum just about OWB's.....

I guess there's one for everything...

I have been building my own for a couple months now in my spare time. I am going to try and get some pictures posted.

Anyway, I wanted to introduce myself. I look forward to learning and sharing with all of you...

Looks like you are progressing nicely on your build. There is lots of information here that will be helpful. This only my second year with OWB sure saves on heating bill. You have to like cutting wood for them. Mine loves wood. I had thought about building my own before i purchased one. At the time just couldn't fit it into schedule. Hats off to all those that do though. Welcome to form.

Thanks Mike. I wish i had found this forum before I started. I hope to have it up and running in the next few weeks. I have a good bit of time that I can take off from work, and the initial cost of a new stove sealed the deal for me....I also just like building stuff.... ;D

Nice to see another furnace coiming to life.
Nice job on your fabrication.DId you put any air or water in it to check for leaks on your seams?
I can't tell from your pics, but did you design any adjustment into your doors hinges so you can adjust them to keep them sealed shut?
That seems to be a major area for air leaks and control problem on these boilers.
Great job and keep the pics coming!

Thanks jackel. No I haven't tested it for leaks. I should have, but I'm a welder by trade so I'm prettty confident in the welds. I didn't design any adjust ment in the hinges, but I have 2 rows of rope gasket where it seals. I will have to adjust if I have a problem though.

I'm hoping to get the siding on it this week. I insulated most of it on saturday. I will be putting up more pics as I go along.

The pics I have posted don't show the vertical stack, or the door handle which I am happy about how it turned out.

I really need to get this thing up and running or I won't be keeping the promise to my better half about having it heating the house this winter.... :-[

I am right there with ya about telling the wife it will heat the house THIS winter.
I am a Millwright and welder by trade also, but welding vessels so they don't leak is another thing.I would advise you to fill it with water or low air pressure.(like about 5lbs), and check it before you close it all up.I would sure hate to see you go to all the trouble then have to pull it apart because of a contaminated weld.
good luck and keep the pics coming

Looks like you will be plumbing it into the house real soon.  I didnt notice if you indicated where you live but I can say you have some great looking real estate in the back ground of your pics.  Would you mind telling what thickness of steel you used for your firebox?

Lookin Good! Won't be long now.I just lit mine off last night, and the feeling of something you built performing like you wanted it too is really gratifying.I hope you get that same feeling when you do.
I do agree what a beautiful background you have!

I live in southwest VA, next to VA Tech, in the appalachian mountains. I've got some good pics of the scenery, I'll see if I can dig them up.

The firebox is all 1/4" plate. I hope to have it fired up in the next week, or so....

I watched your video today. Very impressive build. I'm getting kind of anxious to get mine up and running. I need to get somebody out to dig my ditch, which has been difficult due to the weather. I may have to just rent a mini ex, and knock it out myself. Now that the fabrication is done, I'm going to have ot decide soon.

Sometimes I think we're everybody's enemy. We are in for some down years for a while on the football field....

At least ya'll have got a little bit of culture over there. It's like a string of ghost towns around here nowadays....

Yea, Floyd is a nice little town to live in. I think it has found a way to stay alive while many other small towns are stumbling.

Yeah rent a small track hoe or something don't do like i did and have the bright idea of digging it by hand to save a few bucks, which by the way did not work. Ran into a big rock about 8 inches deep .dug all day didn't get anywhere. Went next day rented small track hoe dug ditch back to rental place by noon with rental. Used my tractor with scrape blade to backfill latter. Live and learn don't we. Wife just laughed said I told you to go ahead and rent what you need.
Looks like you are getting close , keep us posted. I watched video to Very impressive!!!

nice looking job. you might find the need to keep the exhaust pipe pitched ever so slightly to drain the sooty condensate that will develope from a non insulated exhaust pipe.keep up the good work!

Here it is up and running... Been running for a little over a month...The only real problem I had was I tried to run a 007. Upgraded to a 009 and have had zero problems.

i dont have that problem with my owb,but i put a wood stove in my garage at my house in northern nh and didn't use insulated pipe ..because of the cost, and the pipe out side had 12'' sooty icicle's hanging off. when it was burning! liqufied creasote is pretty corrosive and i would hate to see your stack rot off.happy burning! ;D

Nice install of your inside piping
Do you need to put a mounting bracket on your plate exchanger to support  the wieght?
I like what you've done
Title: Re: Hello
Post by: Airgap on October 08, 2011, 08:03:56 PM
Thanks all.

No support needed on the plate ex. There's a hanger on the pipe about 18" above it after an ell, and it's cut in right above the water heater.

Year 2 going great so far....Didn't run it long enough at the end of last winter to know for sure....

This Spring/Summer, I will be adding a domestic recirc line, and piping a HX into the air handler for my upstairs bonus room(800 sq. ft.)...

Rome wasn't built in a day.... ;D

Thanks. I kind of borrowed ideas from several stoves. Then I kind of winged it...

If/when i were to do another one, I would change a lot of things....I won't go into that now, but I learned a lot reading this forum...

Using pipe instead of plate would have saved so much time and work, but live and learn...

Before you build another we should talk, i'm also thinking of building another with a few changes, but round would not be one of them. If yo're interested i could explain.
