General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Generator backup and sizing?
« on: March 03, 2014, 07:11:54 PM »
I have a 7500 watt diesel generator. I hooked it up with a transfer switch on the side of the breaker panel box. Got it all hooked up Saturday. It took us all day to run wires from the building. Don't want to leave the generator outside with people stealing them like crazy when power goes out. Thought we would loose power with this last storm but got lucky and missed it. So we shut the panels off today and fired it up to check if it would be ok and run what we need. Worked great and gen never ran hard!!! We are better prepared for outages now!!

What works best for me is just enough wood to keep the coal coming back to life. I usually put about 5 stcks of wood around my coal bed and let it cycle a couple times then add a 5 gallon buck of coal. That will last 24 hours easly. The first cycle with coal does smoke some but not bad. Saves a lot on wood but I have to buy coal and I get wood for free so I save coal for cold nights.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Generator backup and sizing?

Just would like to know some different ways of hooking up some backup power and the size of the generator to get it done? With the potential of another ice storm headed this way kinda scrabbling to get things right before it get here. Was without power for 3 days the last time and this storm sounds like it could be worse. Thanks

Sounds great glad to see you got the fire going good. I after about 3 days of using coal load the stove with just wood to build the bed back up some and then cut back in the wood and add coal back in and seems to be working great. With the temps going up this coming up week I will back off the coal as the stove will idle longer.

I have been using coal when the temps get below 10 and helps keep burn times longer. I usually make aure I have a few chunks of wood and then I have been putting in a 5 gallon bucket size of coal and it last a long time. The wood will get to burning and then fire the coal up. It makes the load last a long time. I actually did it one time and got almost 30 hours out of just one cycle. My biggest thing is getting the coal. Had to drive an hour to get it. I will have a ton on hand next year ready to go!!!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Transfer Switch or Interlock Kit

I like the idea of backing feeding because I can turn off and on breakers as I choose to where we are in the house(we have 3 floors). My breaker box has a place that I can put a pad lock to keep anybody from throwing the main breaker back on. I am going to ask my electric company if they are ok with that. I don't want anybody hurt and sure don't want any trouble.

I was reading that if you tie it straight to the breaker box and don't use a interlock switch you can be arrested.

Congradulations on your purchase!!! You will see a big difference in the heat and will love it. Months before I got mine hooked up bill was averaging or $800!! That was keeping the temp at 70 or below. Now keep the temp at 73!!!! Bill now is less than $150 a month. So you did a good thing and don't be afraid to ask questions lots of good people here that will help you out.

Scott had been telling for a while to try some but just didn't do it. But with the temps staying as cold as they are for so long I said let's give it a shot. I was amazed how good it did. What was good as it really wasn't much coal that I put in there. Coal guy said I will get you some big clumps saved for when you come back and you will see how good they will do for you.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Burning wood and coal!!!!
« on: January 28, 2014, 07:54:27 PM »
Been wanting to try and mix some coal with the wood and see if it can help burn time and cut down in wood consumption. So went yesterday and bought some and would give it a try. I have 10000E Heatmaster. With these cold nights I have been filling it full trying to get 24 hour burn cause I leave for work at 4 in the morning. So yesterday I filled stove just under half the way full and put in a 5 gallon bucket of coal in with it. Peices of coal averaged baseball to softball in size. Made sure they are spread out and on top if the wood to get the air to burn right. That was at 4:00 pm. I told my oldest son to go check the stove for me at 11:00 am. Said the temp was at 183 so it is still holding temp. I thought it would be good if it would hold till I got home at 5pm. Check the stove when I got home temp was at 179 with fan running so I opened the door just to see how it looked. Fire was going good and still had wood and could see the coal burning to. Raked everything around to even it out and fire got so hot I had to stop and shut the door. So I let it go for a while and check it again later. Went out at 9 and the temp was at 157 opened the door and it needed some attention so I put in the same that I did yesterday to see if I can get the same burn time or if it was fluke!!! That was 29 hours on half full stove if wood with coal added to it. If I can get these results with these temps being this cold I will be mixing all the time!!!
