General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Water treatment
« on: June 15, 2012, 07:51:15 AM »
I have a Shaver 165 that I installed last year (December 2012). I added 1/2 gallon of water treatment......turned water pink.

The water is no longer pink and I feel that I probably need to add more treatment. I called the supplier of the original solution and he said it would be $65 + 20 to ship a gallon of treatment. I thought $85 bucks was a little steep.

Any suggestions on what to purchase and where to get it would be greatly appreciated!!

I have 'city' water; no well pump.

My latest electric bill states 'actual' which is suppose to mean someone read the meter I guess. Here they just drive by and the meter is read from the truck.

I guess I will give it one more month. Maybe they estimated it and failed to note that on the bill. I hope so anyway.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Help with mystery!!
« on: January 28, 2012, 01:28:07 PM »
I got my Shaver 165 up and running around the third week of December. The previous electric bill, i.e. end of November up until around start-up time was $145. I did supplement some of my heat pump usage with a glo-warm unvented heater in the living room.

The electric bill as of the third week of January, wood boiler only heat - $145. I like to 'blew a fuse'. I thought for sure the bill would be half. Any clue gentlemen??

The average temp is posted in the bill reflecting 45* for December and 38* for this bill period.

I do have the pump working 24/7 but I believe it is 1.7amps. The blower is the only thing turning on demand. House stat is one 72 during the day and 66 at night. I even turned the breaker off to the DHW as I am heating my water with the stove.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm thinking wow, did I spend all that $$$ to have the same electric bill??

My first guess would be look at the pump; is it a three speed pump? If so, make sure its on the slowest speed. The water needs time to 'heat up' as it moves through the tank.

is it possable ( i cant quite visualize this setup) that  the water is siphoning through the lines even though the pump is off?

WG,

You were right. The hot water was siphoning back through the outgoing line. After running the pump a couple of times, it has not done it again. If it does, I will install a check valve.

Thanks for all the help guys!!

The sensor is on the pipe going back out to the unit.

Yes I am getting the temp from the Ranco. It is taped with HVAC tape to a 6" nipple just outside the top port on the HWT; the pipe is brass.

The pump is on low speed.

Yes I have the Ranco wired correctly and the pump is controlled by the Ranco.

It truly baffles my mind why when I turn on the hot water, the temp on the Ranco goes up ten to fifteen degrees. I let around fifteen to twenty gallon of water run through. One would think this would cause the temp to fall causing the pump to kick on. Nope, the temp on the ranco goes up

JBG,

OK, answer this one for me. The tank is a 2009 Whirlpool 'energy smart' tank. I have the t-stat on that thing turned down around 95 to 100. The tank has a small green light on the top that blinks codes when there is something going on. It is currently flashing a 'high water temp' code. How is this possible.

The pump is not running and the t-stat is turned way down.

That is correct. I have a 1" T at the top of the tank where the pop-off valve was located. The P-valve is on one side the pump is plumbed off the other side. Goes down through the floor to the wood burner and returns in another line to the bottom of the HWT. There is a T there; return on one side and the drain is on the other side of the T. On the top where the 1" line comes from the T, I have a 6" nipple before it drops down to the three speed pump. On the side of the six inch nipple, I have taped the Ranco probe to the side of the nipple with HVAC tape.

I went in a little while ago and the Ranco said 140. I turned on the hot water on the nearby 'slop sink' to drain the tank a bit to see if the temp would drop. The temp in turn moved to 158 degrees. What the crap is going on??  One would think the temp would drop since I was introducing cold water to the tank.

The pump never kicked on since it is set on 135.

Help!!

Shaver Furnace / HWT - Help
« on: December 23, 2011, 07:35:18 PM »
Ok, here we go again.

I have the Shaver 165 and installed a pump at the HWT to circulate my water to the burner. I turned my t-stat on the tank down to around 100. The pump is controled with a Ranco t-stat set at 135 with a differential of 5 degree's.

Since I got the thing going, the Ranco has consitently stayed around 145 - 152 degree's. I tried running the hot water in a slop sink next to the tank and the temp went up as I ran the water.

What I am missing here.

Any help appreciated!!

Bill

Shaver Furnace / Ranco digital thermo question
« on: December 20, 2011, 10:47:47 AM »
I bought one of the Ranco digital t-stat's to put on my Shaver 165. I was going to 'rig' a dry port of the probe. I have a peice of 3/8" soft copper that I could sweat a cap on and lower it down in the tank allowing enough to stick out to insert the probe.

Do you guys think this would work. There is about a 1/16" clearance around the probe and the inside of the copper. I think there would not be much in the way of a temp diviation.

Comments welcome.

BTW, I was going to insert the copper tubing down along the side of the 3/4" copper for my HW supply.

Thanks!!

Shaver Furnace / help for a newbie
« on: December 17, 2011, 07:53:50 PM »
couple of questions guys

How does one know when the water is boiling. I built my first fire around 2pm. The fan finally kicked off around 7ish. The t-stat is the cheapie that came on the unit.

I went out around 8 to top off the tank because this is inital start up and i know the pex lines and EX took some of the water. I noticed steam coming from the top off port on the left side of the stove. When I opened the valve, water kinda shot out from the overflow.

Secondly, when I open the stove to load, a lot of smoke comes out. This is even after I turn off the fan via a switch

Thanks in advance!!

Shaver Furnace / Re: Wiring a 165

Where does one purchase the Aquastat thermo to attach on the HX?
How much are they and does anyone know how it is wired in. I would really like to get out of mounting a second thermo in the house

Thanks for all the input fellas!!!

I have everything hooked up and wired with the exception of the "black wire" as described in the Shaver manuel going to the blower fan.

Can I go ahead and build a fire and just turn my fan on manually until a tech gets the black wire tapped into the blower. Or can someone tell me what wire I tap into in the furnace. I took the cover off the furnace and found three or four wires going to the blower none of which are black.

I have the thermo on 160 on the back of the stove. shouldn't everything else work when the water reaches that temp?

All input and help greatly appreciated!!

Shaver Furnace / Wiring a 165
« on: December 16, 2011, 05:44:03 AM »
I am a new OWB owner and recenlty purchased a Shaver 165. I am disappointed to say the least. It looks like a ninth grade shop class built the thing.

Anyhow, the book is not clear on how to hook up a second thermostat. Can someone please help. I have a six wire digital thermostat and I am wanting to set a second thermostat next to it; I purchased a honeywell (heat only) to run the blower when needed.

Do I jump wires from the existing thermostat to the new one? and if so which ones?

also the manual says to run the black wire from the 12/3 to the blower in my furnace; which terminal do i connect to in the furnace??

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
