General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Extra fan controls added. FYI
« on: November 12, 2014, 10:54:00 AM »
That's what I thought. I do need to come up with a timer or install a relay for the door draft solenoid. My timer on the door fan won't work with a solenoid. Always something to tinker with!!!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Extra fan controls added. FYI
« on: November 12, 2014, 09:46:15 AM »
I was going to post in Electronics but thought here might be better. Some of our readers might be interested and want to add this to their furnace as I did. I'm not sure how all furnaces are set up but I have a Wooddoctor WD 8000. This is for the fire box fan and the heat exchanger fans in my shops that I heat. I may leave home for a day or two at a time and that means no wood is being fired in the furnace. Since there is no need to run any of these fans with no heat in the water, I've added fan controls in series with the 120VAC thermostats on the heat exchangers. I used standard stack controls that are used on any forced air furnace. I also added a resettable timer on the fire box fan to shut it down. This one is adjustable from 0-360 minutes. They have been working very well for 4 years now. Maybe this will help someone in need of such controls.
Thanks,
Darrel

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Aquastat vs thermastat
« on: April 27, 2012, 10:40:36 AM »
66,
I can understand having separate controls for two heating systems. That's pretty much what I was saying about the control to shut off my fans when the water temperature drops. Since you already have a backup furnace you have the thermostat and thats all you need. What I have learned what is good for me maybe not good for you because of your time at home.. I have had two thremostats for years and it works well. I guess all the 2nd aquastat is doing is to tell the gas furnace it is needed. Darrel

Adding to the post. I heat two buildings with one furnace and use the aquastat for the furnace control and thermostats in the buildings for heat regulation. One of my shops has an oil furnace for backup (I use that fan for the heat exchanger in the plenmum) when I can't tend the fire. I have also added controls to the fans so when the water temperature drops below 50 degrees F. the fans will shut off and not throw cold air and maybe prolong water heat. But there is two differant controls needed for correct operation.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Water treatment?
« on: April 27, 2012, 07:17:45 AM »
I am in need of the correct water treatments required for an OWB. I understand the Ph and alkalinity levels but having a difficult time finding the correct corrosions and scale inhibitors needed. If you add the recommended amount supplied on the bottle, how do you know if that is correct? It just seems like a guess. I have read most of the posts and I'm sure it is in here. I would appreciate someone repeating themselves. Is there a independant lab close to eastern Ohio that could test? Thanks guys, Darrel

Plumbing / Plastic PEX fittings

Has anybody used the plastic fittings for inside your buildings? They are supposed to be better than brass for corrosion protection. Thanks
