BUILDING MY OWN OWB...NEED TIPS!!!
« on: December 16, 2014, 10:06:51 AM »

hello everyone,

I have a 500 gallon  oil tank (1/4 thick) and a 500 Gallon Propane tank (3/8 thick). The Diameter of the oil tank is much larger than that of the propane tank. The oil tank is shorter, propane tank is narrower and longer. Oil tank will serve as my water jacket and propane tank as my firebox. I have everything i need as far as design but i have one simple thing im unsure of:

HOW WOULD YOU MOUNT THE FIREBOX INSIDE OF THE WATER JACKET??? they are both cylinders.

thanks...any pics or input would be great!!!!!!

I HAVE NEVER BUILT MY OWN BOILER.  Ok that is out of the way

Thoughts:
Water circulation is important, and lack of circulation causes hot spots and ISSUES
No one ever complained about too many ports on a boiler (as long as you are a good welder, or know one...)

I would think you want the firebox to be shifted towards the bottom, of the water jacket, as hot water rises and hottest part of fireboxes are generally the TOP!

**Don't skimp of insulation, ANY heat that is released could have gone into your sturcture and thus you need more WOOD to keep house warm.

...other smarter people will add more!?  I HOPE

The only thought I can add would be to make sure the flue goes through the rear of the unit so rain
can't go directly into the firebox!!

Ayuh,....    Mine is a big propane tank, inside a bigger water softener tank,.....

I tacked 4 pieces of 1" rebar in the bigger tank, so's the big tank sits on 'em, 'n has an inch of space all 'round the bottom, growin' larger to the top,...
The return water ports are slightly forward of center, near center side to side, the hot water out ports are at the top aft corner, 'bout center,,...

It holds 'bout 110 gallons of water total,...

With very little "thought" required, it would be rather simple to design a firebox shape that can utilize convection currents inside the water jacket to encourage agitation of the water and suspension of any solids in the water for filtration during water circulation.

I think what Mr Snood meant was with two round tanks it's pretty hard to screw the pooch.
