Does anybody have any idea what the inside temp of a wood furnace averages.  I know when the blower is on, it is hotter and when the blower is off, it is cooler.

I'm just wondering if I could wrap up a Boston Butt in foil and place it inside the wood furnace.

too hot for that. You wood have meat ash when finished.

Wood burns at about 1350 degrees if I remember my fire training, too hot to cook in.

Don't be so quick to say it can't happen, I've seen it.  A guy rigged up a rack and got a huge bed of coals and then shut the door and made it where the fan couldn't kick on and used the heat from the coals!  Said it worked

Thats what I was thinking Scott - Especially on a warm day, it could be done by using just coals and shutting down the fan.  I guess the best way to find out it to "DO IT"

In my Portage & Main there is a smoke passage door above the main feed door where I have done a few baked potatoes. Once the weather gets a little colder I want to try a roast. A lot of my wood is locust which I don't think would be good for smoke cooking but I have some cherry also.

I've wrapped some potatoes, onions, cubed venison and butter in a foil pouch and threw in my OWB.  15 - 20 minutes later, buddies and I were enjoying some good eats..... and a couple cold ones of course.  Just make sure you place it off to the side so it's not directly if front of blower were it gets really hot.  Works great.

This is a very interesting topic!  So you guys are putting some foil wrapped foods in the smoke paasage area?  I really want to try this!

When the weather is mild and the stove blower is not running often the smoke passage takes a long time to bake a potatoe, after it gets cold out it will cook faster. I have left potatoes wrapped in foil in the smoke passage for over 3 hours and they were still good, it doesn't get as hot as you would think.

gives me the ideal to weld anut on the inside at the top to hang a wire by to try some smoking

On mild days, I have turned off the blower, piled up some coals and left potatoes wrapped in foil set in there for a while, works pretty well.

I would say this might be a good advertising gimmik for the companies and helps us reap our investment back quicker by bein dual purpose.  Try and sell me a new furnace now propane boy!
