New thermostat-NEED HELP-PLEASE!
« on: December 26, 2011, 03:06:37 PM »

Decided it was time to get rid of the mercury bulb one. Although there are a lot of "nice" thermostats out there as long as I found one with WI-FI with a IPHONE APP I would be happy. SO I bought this one at home dept this afternoon. http://www.radiothermostat.com/filtrete/products/3M-50/

My current thermostat has the following connections wired:
X2
O
G
Y
T
R
W
F
B

The 3M model says connect:
X2>Tape off-do not use (Auto Emergency heat) Note there is a Emergency heat button on the thermostat if needed
O>O
G>G
Y>Y
T>Tape off do not use (n/a Outdoor sensor)
R>RH
W>W2
F>?
B>C

It's the F wire I'm not sure about. The wire reference chart says G or F is used for fan control and I have both. Do I hook both to G?????

I tired to call tech support that's available 365 days, but I guess that's only during normal business hours.

Thanks in advance for your reply~

I found on the website they are available 8am -midnight. SO I called back and a very nice lady answered.

F wire is also not used and taped off.

It works! All setup and connected through WIFI. It took less than an hour to get it all going. I could not test AC mode since it warns about doing so when outside temps are below 65*. It's 30* now.

I'm very pleased with it. Here's why (So far)
I think our old thermostat was about 3* off. It showed 3* higher than set point of old one after I powered it up.
AUX will not come on unless I tell it to. There was an option to basically turn it off unless in EMRG Mode.
Wife was "afraid" of the old thermostat. I showed her on the IPAD how easy it was to adjust. (Further training may be required)
My first order of business every morning was to turn the heat up, now it will be on before I climb out of bed. I can head str8 for the coffee pot!

Ridge-
I don't have any idea what you just hooked up. I just asked my bride what Wi-Fi is. She said she thought you might be able to adjust your t-stat from your cell phone with it.  If that's the case, I want one so I can mess with her and the kid when I'm away.
As far as heading strait for the coffee pot, well, you must be much younger than me, 'cause that's not the first pot I make a B-line for in the AM!
You have succeeded in making me look electronically irrelevant again :bash:(you know I'm just kiddin')

Ok Marty, you got me there. It's NOT the coffee pot I ran for first thing in the morning. ( you feel better now??)

The thermostat was under $100 at Home Depot. The others I was looking at on line started about $229, more if I wanted a internet connection.

As far as capabilities, there is one error in my statement above about the AUX heat. It will come on if I push EMERG heat but it will also come on if my temp drops 4* lower than my set point. This is adjusted with the DIFF setting. I have my SWING setting at 1*. That if the actual temperature drops 1* below set point, heat will come on. SO the electric heating strips actually have a slim chance of ever coming on during normal heating cycle. (2* difference on old thermostat made heating strips come on)

Here's the bad news. I'm cold! Been spoiled with the other thermostat so long, that the actual reading of 73* feels cold! I have nite time set at 70* and daytime at 72*, but I can see those being adjusted as soon as the wife gets up in the morning.

Good new? I think my wood consumption is going to drop. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad now. I barely went over 1.5 cords since I fired up the green dragon. If I was actually running 76* I can see why the kids thought the house was a little warm. Lower temps should mean lower wood consumption.

We'll play with it a little more tomorrow.

BTW- One way or another we'll going to get those pics posted!

Thanks Bull-

I posted a few snapshots in the gallery.

Wife had no complaint about morning temperature, so that set point is good. And at 6am the program bumped up the temp to 72* as scheduled. It was not quite warm enough for me so I bumped the new set point to 73*. I also changed the SWING to .5* Now it feels just right! I chanaged it back to 1*. Still feels good in here.

There is add on software you can buy (which I did for $10) for data logging. I now know how long in a day my furnace is running. It also has a outdoor weather station (per city) and other important data recording. You can check out the software here: www.setyourthermostat.com
