Furnace runtime
« on: January 04, 2012, 10:22:36 AM »

Just checking to see what is normal.

3000 sq2 foot home
R13 walls
20 inches blown insulation in ceiling.
2007 built home by previos owner

Furnace seems to run often:
9 min on
19 min off
Timed it for 2 hours last night
OAT was 20*F

Basement could be sucking quite a bit of heat
out .....poured 8ft walls uninsulated.
Cb6048 set @ 185

According to my log I'm going through a burn cycle once an hour. Burn time is generally 15 minutes.

Keep in mind it was 0* last night and only warmed to 20* now.

Green Dragon set at 185*
2700 sq ft (including basement) WELL insulated house- Thanks to little unscheduled test last night when the electric went out.

I should rephrase that , i'm not talking about OWB burn cycles. I'm refering to my fan kicking on in the house furnace.

That's really going to depend on how well your house is insulated. I can get you those numbers too if you want. (Thanks to my new wifi thermostat)

That will depend on how it is setup.  They size gas furnaces to run pretty much constant at the coldest time of the year.
A larger pump and heat exchanger will make it put out hotter air and run less but then the temperature might not be as even in the house.

What model pump do you have and what size heat exchanger? Did much of the plenum get blocked off when it was installed?

I had to build plenum bigger to accomadate heat exchanger. ( didn't want to restrict air flow).

Owb is 110 ft from house logstor 1" pipe with taco 009.

Bought unit used 2 years old

Previous heat was heat pump with reistant backup

So maybe it is suppose to run that often.

Thanks for the info guys i really appreciate it.

How much temperature drop are you getting on the return side of the heat exchanger when the fan is running?
I would like to see real flow numbers of a 009 vs a 007 because looking at the charts it looks to me like most of the time it would move less water than a 007 but use a lot more power.
The 009 does real high head pressure but only a max of 10GPM. Your 26mm pex won't have much head pressure loss so not really doing much good.

Self install and setup .....so quite possible i should have went with 007. I only installed temp gauges where it leaves owb and before it returns in the owb. Temp loss is 20-25 when furnace fan is running. Reads about a 3 degree loss when fan isn't running  but is going throught my side arm on hwh.

Not bad for the total cycle.

Your lite in the walls, could add a bit more (R31+) in the ceiling and how many windows and how good are they? Lose a lot of heat thru the windows which very few people even consider.

Still a 9 on 19 off is not bad.

True about window coverings! We been replacing the old vinyl louvered with pull down pleated ones. You can feel the difference!

Location makes a difference on what is needed. He must be down south because I don't think R13 will meet code here. I believe it is somewhere around 19 or 21 in the walls here.
If it is heating the house ok then I would just leave it alone. If you don't have a spare pump it might be worth getting a 007. It would be real interesting to see how the return temperature drop compares between the two pumps. There must be some reason Central Boiler sells the 009 pumps. I just can't see it looking at the charts.

Lots of windows on main floor. Seems like there not the best.( cold to the touch)  Previous owner built the house, but it isn' that old so i wouldn't think they would be to bad??? >:(

Anyway to test the windows?

Not much i can do about insulation in walls.

I was planning on having basement walls and sill plate spray foamed this summer.

Your in the cold zone, so anything you can do with additional insulation, window coverings and window upgrade will pay off substantially.  You know all that.  Main question was fan cycling and I don't think you doing bad.  How many times a day are you loading your OWB?

Issue isn't burning to much wood.... This is my first wood burning expeirence and i'm actually amased @ how little wood it uses for doing domestic hotwater and heating house. I put maybe 6-8   5 " logs in every 12 hours.

I was just curious if my furnace fan was undersized or if it was running to often.  It sounds like its normal
