Okay, I'm confused
« on: January 10, 2012, 04:23:01 PM »

This evening when I got home from work my e-classic 1400 was dead.  Everything I put in it this morning was unburned along with the remaining stuff from overnight.  I had the same  problem on Saturday evening but I caught it before it was too late. I simply rearranged the logs. The one thing this things got going for it is that inside 45 minutes the water temp was up to speed.  I'm certain I'm not stoking it too tight.  And, it didn't bridge either.  The only thing I've been doing is letting the temp drop in the house to 62* while I'm away at work and down to 65* at night.  With the programmable thermostats it comes up to temp before I get home and before I get out of bed respectively.  The one thing I'm going to try for awhile is not let the temps drop while I'm away, leave it at 68 for the entire time.  Plus, it'll be interesting to see if the wood consumption changes.  If anyone has any ideas that I should try, I'm all ears.  Thanks, Roger

I only have a 2 wire thermostat hooked to my Honeywell Programmable for the heat pump I want to do a programmable just for the fan on the air handler, just havent gotten around to it. Is this something that happen's often. My boiler I will sometimes not top of in the morning before going to work, come home it might be 90 degree's most of the time's it's not. Im well pleased with the performance and the additional heat that come's out of the vent's.

pintopaul;  Essentially you're saying your experience shows leaving the thermostats alone and it hasn't gone out?  I'll give it a try for awhile and see what happens.  Perhaps, it'll help too when the winter becomes more like, well, like winter.  The outside temps have been jumping all over the place coupled with me lowing the house temps, maybe I was just adding insult to injury.  Thanks for the tip.  Roger

Roger,
Can't you program the 1400 to pulse every 10 or 15 minutes for a minute or two? That should be enough to keep the fire burning even if you turn the thermostat down, shouldn't it? It seems that is what some of the other E-classic owners do with success.

Hello all - Upate.

Due to not carefully reading the operators manual, being in a hurry when servicing the OWB and not paying attention, no wonder the thing died a couple of times over a few days.

At 1:30am this morning I was awaken by the running of the oil furnace.  When the OWB was installed it was plumbed through the oil furnace in the event the fire in the OWB was lost.  Well, you guessed it, the OWB was dead as dead gets.  Before proceeding trying to rekindle the OWB, I carefully read the operators manual looking for clues.  I saw the picture showing the upper and lower rows of air holes.  When I got outside, I decided to remove everything and I mean everything from the OWB.  That's when I noticed the lower air holes, all were plugged and about 35% of the upper holes were plugged.  No wonder that thing died.  I would too if I wasn't getting any air either.  The upper holes cleared rather easily due to it being ash and dust.  But, the lower air holes were another story - clogged with creosote.  It took me a bit over 3 hours of steady working to clear them.  Finally, at 4:45am this morning I rekindled the OWB.  As I write this the OWB is now providing heat to the house.  I'll be taking the day off from work to keep an eye on it through the day to be sure I'm on the right track.  Time will tell.

I hope to post this evening with an update and hopefully a positive outcome and my labors were worth it.  Roger

Roger,

The simplist of problems often times the most difficult to troubleshoot.  Human factor, I suppose!  Quite a late night shift you put in.  I have found beer to be most helpful during times like that.  We P&M owners also have blower holes which require frequent attention.

     Glad all is well...

Yeah, human factor. A lesson learned.  It reminded me of my previous life as a volenteer medic in our towns EMS department.  Thankfully, I have been given the gift of patience and that's the only way one can rectify a problem like this.  All in all, 3 hours worth of cleaning wasn't that bad.  When I saw the creosote, I figured at least 5 to 6 hours worth of work but I was surprised when I got them clean after 3 hours.  I need to find something on a flexible shaft wire a round stiff wire brush attached to it so I can run it through the holes at least once a week.  I'm thinking the automotive stores may have something that mechanics use.

I'm staying home from work to put it through its paces by making changes to the house temp to see how it responds.  So far, so good.  Wish me luck.
