Help with mystery!!
« on: January 28, 2012, 01:28:07 PM »

I got my Shaver 165 up and running around the third week of December. The previous electric bill, i.e. end of November up until around start-up time was $145. I did supplement some of my heat pump usage with a glo-warm unvented heater in the living room.

The electric bill as of the third week of January, wood boiler only heat - $145. I like to 'blew a fuse'. I thought for sure the bill would be half. Any clue gentlemen??

The average temp is posted in the bill reflecting 45* for December and 38* for this bill period.

I do have the pump working 24/7 but I believe it is 1.7amps. The blower is the only thing turning on demand. House stat is one 72 during the day and 66 at night. I even turned the breaker off to the DHW as I am heating my water with the stove.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm thinking wow, did I spend all that $$$ to have the same electric bill??

Wink
Give it another month to do the comparison, sometimes they are back several weeks and depending when they read the meter,

a high efficiency heat pump is the best at using low electric, if someone is using electric as main heat source.

i live in the sticks and up until a few years ago my local electric provider only read teh meter every three months. we were billed on average use for 2 months then the meter was read on teh 3rd and we would settle up the difference that month. perhaps you are on a bill like this?

there are about 3400 btu in 1 kilowatt hour

an average winter here in ontario canada requires about 100,000,000 btu to heat an average house

if your house were "average" and were in ontario canada you would need about 28,571 kw hours of electic heat (heat pump i am not sure)

at 10 cents a KW hour that is about 2800.00 bucks for a years of heat I know yoru little blower and pump are not using that much!

If you have a well pump check that. I have herd people say that there pump was running and drove up the bill. the pump will run if you have a hole in the pipe down the well or between the well and the house

Is your bill estimated or actual, ours here is estimated every other month.  They screwed it up so bad one we didn't pay another bill for 4 months.  Although part of that is due to the fact that we have grain bins on the same meter and thus great seaonal fluctuations.

I have 'city' water; no well pump.

My latest electric bill states 'actual' which is suppose to mean someone read the meter I guess. Here they just drive by and the meter is read from the truck.

I guess I will give it one more month. Maybe they estimated it and failed to note that on the bill. I hope so anyway.

Does your bill show what you used the same time last year?  My electric bill may not be lower, but my LP Gas bill is.  This winter so far, it has been $0.00

Sounds like maybe your heat pump is still on.  When your fan kicks on go outside and see if your outside unit is on.  If not maybe a heat strip??

My electric is still staying the same, being the geniuses in my house won't turn out lights and such.  The blower motor still rund the same or more because of the "free" wood heat, but I am NOT paying the high cost of propane as well.  That is where my savings comes into play.  But that is just my situation.

I ran into a heatpump the other day where the strip heat was coming on whenever the fan was on. Found out it was a bad relay ( nothing I did). I would check and make sure that the strip heat isn't coming on or the outside unit isn't coming on. When the blower is running go outside and listen to the unit and make sure it isn't running or humming.

Also, do you have a balance?  I still have a balance from last year that I am paying off.

What I've noticed with my electric bill since the install of the e-classic 1400 is that it has doubled compared to when it was not operating.  Granted the pump is running 24/7 (It's one of the Taco pumps) and the blower operates how many times during the day and night is anyone's guess.  So, I'm really not surprised to see an increase just the size of the increase has surprised me a bit.  Roger

What the heck?  Your electric bill went up????  The pumps only use maybe 8-15 bucks a month depending on size but the blower shouldn't cost less than a dollar.

I dont know what is going on but your electric bill should have dropped a bunch depending on what you were heating with before?  If you had gas I understand but for it to double I donno
