Hi all, Well, I finally have decided to let the E-classic 1400 burn out during the day today.  It's been running nonstop since I fired her up the first time at the end of Oct., 2011.  This has been a learning curve for me due to it being different technology and foreign to me.  I must say however, that I absolutely love the thing.  After years of heating with fuel oil and an indoor wood stove in the living room, this was a joy to use.  All of the mess is outside, no chance of a chimney fire, and I don't have to handle the firewood a half dozen times before the need to use it.  I used just a bit over 6 cord of wood to heat 2400sq.ft. home (cira 1840's) and domestic hot water.  The fire wood cost me $100.00/cord.  If I had used the oil furnace, it would have cost me over $5,000.00 for the same comfort.  I'm going to let the water in the OWB cool before I dig into it to clean it.  That may take a couple of days or more before it cools.

I want to take a moment to thank all of you who offered their knowledge, insite, humor, opinions, encouragement, etc... to help me through my first season heating with it.  Without your encouragement and willingness to share your knowledge with me, it would have been a very different outcome for me.

Have a great summer.  I'll be using the time to prepare my fire wood for the next heating season.  Plus, i'm renovating my house and that uses a lot of my time.  I'll be frequenting this site throughout the summer to to see what's happening and perhaps share some of the knowledge I have learned.

At $100 a cord I would be tempted to just buy my wood. I need to get mine cleaned out ASAP. I shut it down again about two days ago and then we had a drenching rain last night. After the rain I noticed smoke(or steam?) drifting from the stack so now I am concerned I have wet corrosive ash sitting in the firebox with no fire drying it out.

I should clarify the $100.00/cord; that's log length.  I have to buck it up to length, split and stack to dry.  If I was to buy it by the cord cut to length and split, it would cost around $250.00/cord for green stuff, $300.00 plus for dry stuff.  Plus, if I buy log length I know exactly how much I have once it's cut, split and stacked.  I had purchased 3 cord about 5 years ago already cut to length and split.  When I finally got the chance to stack ( about a month or so later) it only was 3 and half cord.  When called him on it, he said he'd deliver the rest as soon as he could.  2 weeks past by and still no work so I tried to call him again and he had changed his number.  When I consulted a lawyer about it, he said it wouldn't be cost effective if I went after him in court for it, it would cost more than what the wood was worth.

I think firewood salesman are guys who weren't honest enough to make it as used car salesmen. At $300 a cord I'll sell my own wood pile. I just finished hauling in about 20+ cords of big pieces left over from local logging sites. I can wait to see what it piles up to. I say pile because it isn't likely I will find the time to stack it.

The last load of logs delivered I paid for 8 cord at $100.00/cord.  After cut to length, split and stacked I got just smidge over 9 cord.  Needless to say this guy has my business.  I called him to tell him I appreciated the extra and he said he always gives a bit more than what the customer wanted due to some being rotted on the inside and not getting any useful heat out of them.  Lime I said this guy has my business.  Roger

 The day are number when mine is shut down..Last yr was May 29th....I got a pole shed to build! This past fall I bought all of my wood for this coming winter..Some you you might of seen the wood pile pic..I paid $600 a load (7 cord @ $86.00 a cord)....Bought 2 loads at the price lol.. A friend and I sell wood on the side also.. We got $265 a cord for dry seasoned wood..
