Still burning!
« on: May 07, 2012, 07:56:24 PM »

It seems funny to let the house get cooler in May then it was in January so I will just keep the fire burning. So this "mild" heating season is turning into a 8 month fire for me. I don't know what I am doing wrong, I read where guys get through a season on 6 pickup loads of wood or only burn 5 or 6 cord in a standard boiler, heating a similar sized house as mine! I am going to be at 10 cord when this is all done, even with this mild winter. Oh well, I guess it has something to do with keeping the house at 75 or the long hot showers? Anyone else still burning?

Still burning here since oct 1st 2011!...Days are number though!.. I let It out on May 29th last yr.. Probably will burn for another week or so...really depends on the weather..May can still be cold and raw here in New Hampshire.. Had a low of 35F today (mon)..Heat was on when I got up...Still nice to here no  oil boiler running for hot water during showers!..What your reading is...The problem is they probably live in a warmer climate...I live in a colder climate I burn 8-10 cord a burn season...Your doing nothing wrong..NO ONE on this forum can tell you, you burn too much wood..Every situation is so different..

I think you are right woodman, the house at 75* and long hot showers takes a little more wood but it is still cheaper than electric, gas, oil, or propane

Been burning since 31 Dec 2010. Have not purchased any fuel oil since April 2010. Have an 1/8th of a tank left. I guess its time to buy another 100 gallons for the next 5 years!  ;D

I shut down my OWB about a week ago.  I  haven't had time to clean it yet.  I have been shutting off the oil furnace during the day when I'm not home and I shut it off at night.  When I get home from work, I turn it on to break the chill the house, then I shut it off for the night.  I cringe a bit when I hear the oil furnace come one but that lasts for a few minutes only.

I thought I was done. The house has been 75 degrees all week and we had the ac on the week before. I just came in from building a fire to warm up the wife. She gets cranky when the house is cold in the mornings.

i believe when someone post a usage similar to that they aren't being honest . i have been burning since the middle of Sept.2011 and still going  for hot tub & hot water and occasional heat. real close to 11 cords when done at the end of may.

There are way too many factors in play to compare usage accurately. I am heating a newly constructed and carefully insulated 2000 square feet. I do not yet have DHW connected but I burned under 3 cords this winter with no back up heat source in place. If it were not for my plans to heat the DHW, garage, clothes dryer, and a greenhouse the purchase price of my CB5036 would have been way too high to justify. This was the first full winter heating in Southern Indiana. Maybe next winter will put it to the test.

[/quote] Well like I've said on some posts on here..No one on this forum regardless on what brand of what OWB, where your located, what type of wood being burned  can tell you that your burning too much wood..I do gotta say Im not sure if everyone  out there knows exactly what a cord of wood is..Being that said..I see it.. I see it a lot..Truck load of wood "sold as a cord of wood".. NOT EVEN CLOSE!
