Basic furnace connection question from a newbie!
« on: August 12, 2012, 06:36:50 AM »

1st thing, Great Site!! been lurking for awhile, and it helped me make up my mind!  :D

Background:
CB 6048 bought used it's a 2008.
Getting prepped for the install. Forms are in, we're pourng the slab Monday.
Current heat is forced hot air system with oil burner, and a Harmon XXV Pellet stove.

I've found so many answers to so many questions, but I have a basic one.
After I get the HE plumbed in and the furnace online and ready to go,
what do I need to do to bypass the oil burner and just run the fan?
There must be some sort of safety that keeps the fan from running when the burner's not burning?

I'm assuming that all I need my thermostat to do is to start the fan when calling for heat?
I probably won't be using the burner for backup, although I'd like to keep that option open.
Unless we're going away for an extended time I'll probably just keep the pellet stove as backup.

Thanks in advance...

Cliff

Does your current boiler heat hot water or air? Are you using a exchanger?

While mine is a forced air propane system, the concept is the same. I have read more in depth ways of accomplishing this, but the easiest is two thermostats. By using jumper wires to the power and the fan from the existing thermostat you can power just the fan when heat is called for. This also allows you to set the existing thermostat 5 to 10 degrees lower than the secondary one. If for some reason the outdoor boiler goes out the existing system will kick on. Also I have read many posts about people trying to accomplish this with one thermostat. It seems this gets crazy complex and finding a product to accomplish this sounds close to impossible.

Does your oil furnace have a fan only mode? If it is an older model it probably doesn't and you will probably want to buy a fan center relay to run it. (about $30)
