Generator fuel type
« on: September 02, 2012, 11:37:35 AM »

I know this is not the right forum but you guys on here are the self sufficient type so I thought I would pose my question here.  I'm looking at standby generators and can't decide between propane or gasolene powered.  I have a 100 gal propane tank for a fireplace insert which I don't use much now that I have a owb.  What are your thoughts on which type of fuel to use.   What are you using?

I just bought a 10KVW that is PTO driven  on wheels I can use to power the house or pull it to the woods if i would want to, it takes 20hp tractor or more to run it.  You don't have to worry about trying to get a motor running thats been sitting for the last so many years.

Why not look to see if it can be set up for both fuel types? My neighbor's gen. can run on either gasoline or propane... After all you do have all the propane for that fireplace...

When I was shopping for a way to back up my home power I considered gas but then I considered the logistics of hauling and storing gasoline. I do not want large quantities of gasoline in my garage so the only real option would be an outdoor tank. In either case you need to have enough on hand to run for a long stretch in case something catastrophic happens and roads are closed or gas stations are inoperable. I do not recall even seeing an automatic standby generator that runs on gasoline. If such a thing exists how does the fueling of that work? Do you have to be around to fuel it every so often?

I think the best is a genrac that uses LP or natural gas if available. no problem storing the LP and the genny starts it's self weekly to test it's self.
