better draft ideas?
« on: December 08, 2012, 06:14:42 PM »

Guys,  got a question about improving my draft on my Empyre.  Has no draft issues while burning or sitting idle,  just that when I open door and load wood, i wish there wasnt so much smoke coming out, Empyre talks about a smoke curtin od something to that effect.  Just wondering.  I do have 9 ft of chiminy on unit as it sits inside a building. . Im about 3 ft short of my peak,  im wondering if i would add on that other 3 ft if it would help my draft when i open the door,  or is it possbly too high already?  Could stack be cooling off to much?  But on other hand i had same issue when it was outside and only 6 ft of stck on it.  Just need some ideas what i could do to improve.  Thanks all

It seems that many of these boilers on the market have the ceiling of the firebox coming right out to the door opening,  meaning it's flat accross the ceiling right to the door.  I know my CB E-2300 is that way and I also get a lot of smoke.  A regular wood furnace that I have has a "curtain" hangs about 3" down that is hinged so it allows you to fill the firebox right to the top and after the wood is in far enough the "curtain" falls back down.  This does help a lot to slow down the escaping smoke.  I've thought about having a welder rig something up for me in my CB.

he may need to go up 3-4 feet, to be above peak...you are probly getting a down draft with the wind going over peak and pushing back down pipe....also like dwneast said the flap works my thermal-control has one,  but the door is still not at the top of the firebox....works great push it up as your pushing wood up to top when filling and it flaps down as wood burns down...

Well the higher you are the more draft your gonna get..Im up 19ft.. Your still gonna get smoke out the door..Thats a given..My best suggestion is...When you open the the door..leave it open a whisker for a min or two..You'll notice a rush of smoke go out of your pipe..Do that and you wont get a blast of heavy smoke in your face...Since it is in a building.. The building will hold the smoke

Well on those days the smoke is a lot higher than,If i had just a short stack..For the most part the smoke doesn't stick around...Once in a blue moon the smoke goes up and comes right back down..Nothing I can do about that.. Mine smokes the most when you first fill it.. Give a cycle or 2...Very clean burn afterward....Like I said its night and day with the smoke issue...My neighbors have never complain.. Heck they give me stuff to burn lol..I would think they be more prone to complain If I didn't do anything ya know.(respect)...I did the tall stack all on my own. Because I wanted the smoke not sticking around here .And being that tall, the top of my stack is way above the closest neighbor peak of their house..

I have a chimney bypass handle which takes care of the smoke when opening the door. Burnrite is the best.

yes it is.. The brand of pipe my boiler uses "supervent".. or "superpro" You can purchase it at Lowe's..Ive done the wood stove pipe for a stack.. Burns out and rots within a season..Fig I spend the $$,  do it once and forget about it
