Curious About Coal

Can you burn coal in a stove without grates? Is it better to burn either all coal or all wood, or is it ok to mix the two?

It won't burn well at all in the design you have.  Coal burns much better when air comes in under it with a forced draft.

I've got some videos on here in the heatmaster section of me burning coal, it works the best mixing the two together.  You can get some crazy long burn times just by adding 20-40 pounds of coal.
