Trouble keeping coals/wood lit
« on: March 02, 2013, 08:12:02 AM »

Hey guys just fired up my boiler a few days ago. Everything is going good with exception to coals + wood going in the firebox. I have the E-classic 2400 model for a 2600 sq/f house. The house is brand new and super insulated. I am wondering if I am not getting enough draw on the wood boiler for frequent burn cycles. I have factory setting on the boiler (fan kicks on when water temp reaches 174 kicks off at 185). Thermostatic valve transfers to heat exchanger at 150. I have the propane ignition system and i'm going to install it tommarow to see if that will keep the fire going. I am burning 2-3' dry split hardwood/pine. If anyone has any tips on how to keep the fire going that would be great. I am having to re-lite the fire 1-2 times in a 24h period. The temperature outside is running between 20-40F. Reaction chamber is empty and vent holes clear.  I am filling firebox 1/3 full when wood burns down. Any suggestions?

I would be putting the hardwood on the bed to coals and the pine on top of the hardwood..Pine doesn't keep the coals like hardwood wood does..

This is my second year and I was always relighting it until a few weeks into 2013, that is when I stopped messing with the coal bed all I do now is put wood in it, I burn mostly pine. These boilers have a learning curve and you will have to play around a bit, I have mine set at 189 so it goes on around 181, you might want to set up the pulse and adjust it as time goes on, you might want to toss a piece of hard wood in each load until you get everything set up, I have not had to relight mine since early january

Be sure you have established a nice bed of coals.  I believe the manual offers tips how to obtain this.  Make sure you put the pine on top especially if it's a little damp.  This may give it time to dry a bit before the fire getting to it.  I have the CB eclassic 1400 and I have the high setpoint at 185 and the low setpoint at 177.  The pulse is set to turn on every 8 minutes for 50 seconds.  This setup works well for me.  It took awhile to learn what the OWB wanted and once I figured it out, it runs great as JohnBcold said.  Heck, the first couple of weeks operating mine I was cussing and carrying on why I couldn't keep a fire going in it.  I got on here, posted my frustrations and told them what was happening.  Many kind and knowledgeable folks offered some fantastic tips to keep it lit.  I incorporated some of them, learn a few of my own and now it's operating like a charm.  I'm using a good mix of hardwood all 24" long and 4 to 8 inch in diameter.  Nothing larger than that.  Once you learn what your OWB likes, you'll being singing praises about it and wodering why you didn't do this sooner.  I know, I frequently ask myself why I waited so long to purchase mine.  Oh, did I mention that I'm heating 3000sqft and my domestic hot water (DHW)?  The house is a 1840's farmhouse.  Roger

I guess I did not know you could set the pulse on a timer, makes sense now. I will have to play with it tommarow. Factory settings are just not going to cut it. Thanks for the advice guys.

PDF194 congrats on the new boiler! Been running my E2400 now into my 3rd heating season.
You don't need propane to keep the 2400 running, use the air pulse. Air is free!
I have mine set so every 15 minutes it shoots a 50 sec pulse of air. Never goes out. Owners manual tells you how to make this adjustment.
During the first few days of operation, try to burn smaller size wood to establish a coal bed.
Watch the Eclassic initial start-up video and refueling tips videos that came on a CD with your owners manual.
If you did not get the CD you can watch them on the centralboiler.com website.
You can learn in minutes what it may take you months of burning time to learn on your own.
Glad to assist with any tips I can.
Happy burning.

Alright I just read the manual on "pulse"and water temperature differential. I set the boiler to pulse 50 seconds every 9 minutes. I set the differential to 8. My only concern is that water temp will exceed 200. (I doubt it will).  I will continue to monitor at this setting and let ya'll know what works. Thanks

I kept changing the set points to get it spaced out as much as possible,  I am sure you will find you can lower the pulse time and space it out longer

Hello
Congrats on the  boiler  your going to love it.    You shouldn't boiler over if you shut off no higher than 190        I had trouble my first couple of weeks too.          we all have I think
I adjusted my pulse and that took care of it  going out for me and make a habit of running that rod that came with the stove down next to the charge tube to create an opening on one side at least  so it gets air i do it usually when i add wood only          It's a learning curve just like Johnny and boilerman said but you"ll get it.    If you still have trouble. We are here to help.   Alot of smart people on this forum.
