New Home Build...Help
« on: September 02, 2013, 08:40:53 AM »

Hello, I am building a new home in WV and really could use some help from you guys.  I have installed pex tubing throughout basement and garage with proper insulation below.  My house is 3500 sq ft all on one level and the basement will only be used for storage and work area.

My plumber wants me to install a residential boiler that provides heat to a fresh water tank as well as provide heat to the radiant flooring.  I have enough wood on my lot to last a lifetime and I  am going to use a wood boiler outside.  Do these two systems mesh well together?  The inside boiler is pressurized and outdoor boiler not.  Plumber said he will simply install a bypass for when I want to use indoor boiler.  Im so confused now that my head hurts.  I have attached some photos for reference.  Thanks in advance for your help!  Todd

Yes you can use the outdoor boiler as your primary and the indoor as your backup or secondary boiler.

Many ways it can be done.

What part of wv are you in?

I am in Northern part, Wood county.  Does this system sound like overkill ?  How would you do it if it was your house?

I would use a flat plate heat exchanger to separate the two systems. If the boiler is designed to maintain heat all the time it would could be a very simple hookup.

My advise would be, no bypass that has to be manually switched. Do you know yet what your indoor or secondary heat will be? Do you have natural gas in the area? here are a couple of pro's and cons of gas vs. oil, with gas you are typically locked into doing buisiness with one company and cannot shop for a better price with another company, but they are quieter, more efficient, no need for chimney (direct vent ) instant heat, low volume of water to keep hot and wall hung to keep it out of the middle of the floor. Oil can be purchased from any oil dealer allowing you to shop on price and easier to service, both in my opinion should be direct vent keeping any chimney open for an indoor wood fired cookstove. Both should be plumbed primary secondary piping to allow for any future additions to the system, solar thermal, hot tub, pool etc. and keep the manifold on a wall away from your boiler for easy service in the future. Both can then be switched automatically to fossil fuel when the incoming water temp from the wood boiler drops from lack of wood with a simple aquastat wired to B1 on the gas or oil boiler. You will spend some extra cash up front but if you start out right then it will be very easy to expand the system in the future. Very nice looking home, good luck, keep in touch.
