temp drop, dont have a water resavoir
« on: January 04, 2014, 04:17:18 AM »

Hello everyone, second year in the home, i ahve a heatmeaster 5000, everything runs good, now im just trying to make things better and more efficient, i have an approx 4000 sq feet home to heat including the garage and bonus room, although the garage and bonus room i only heat to 50 degrees ,the rest of the home is 74 degrees,my issue is this ,when two zones come on at the same time the temp gauge inside the home on my electric furnace drops low to almost 80 to 90 sometimes, i believe this is because i have in floor and cast iron rads and they consume large amounts of water, i dont like this happening as my furnace then has to work hard to get up to temp,so should i have a water resavoir and if so what are some good ideas on how to set it up..., thanks for all the help everyone.

Are you saying you have the radiant heat hooked direct to the furnace? If so then what you are most likely seeing is the cold water coming out of your zones when they come on which pulls down the return temps. But I may not understand the way yours is installed. I would never recommend installing a reservoir on a Heat Master system. If the problem is simply too low of return temps then you need an additional set of lines to the home, if the problem is the furnace can't keep up then you need a larger furnace.

i have a simple install i believe,i will try and explain it,heat master 5000, i have under 4000 sq feet to heat ,so furnace is plenty big i think...my basement has all in floor, main floor has all cast iron rads ,all on own loops,my bath and kitchen tile have in floor, everything is on its own loop coming from system, my issue is when main flloor and basement come on at same time ,(doesnt happen that ofter) the two zones drain the hot water and the cold water rushes into the system and the temp drops alot, forcing the furnace to work extra hard to bring up th etemp again,my system is working fine ,i would just like this to be alittle better, i have friends who have two homes on one furnace,so they must have zones coming on all the time at the same time, im just trying to learn as much as i can about the furnace and set up.i realize there are several ways to hook them up,i just want a simple set up that works good.

You say ether are on their own loops, but how many supply lines do you have coming off the stove?

A lot more info and pics would be helpful to begin with any useful advise.
If you have 5-6 zones in 4ksqft, you have to have a big enough heat exchanger to supply. However cold water should never be running thru any zone unless boiler temp dropped that low, or you have a malfunctioning mixing device sending cold water in the loop.

Goto caleffi or look up john siegehthaler, they have hundreds of pictures and full design diagrams with explanations on what, why and how systems and devices work. I guarantee you will find an exact layout that matches yours.

Try this link to idronics, they even have one on wood boiler systems, good luck

Do you have a zone or circ relay that has a priority switch capability on it if so you may want to put one of those high demand loops like the rads on a priority zone.
