replacing rope seal...silicone?
« on: January 07, 2014, 07:04:15 AM »

Have read many things about replacing the rope seal with a silicone seal.  When doing this, do you still put the rope seal in the groove and place the high temp silicone over the top of that, or skip the rope seal completely?  Also, what temp rating of silicone do I use?  "High temp" has ranged anywhere from 400-5000 from some of the sites I have been looking at.

when I replaced my door rope gasket I took the old one out and cleaned the groove it sets in(wire brush and wipe clean) and then put high temp silicone in the grove and then the rope gasket in the grove.  I guess I see no advantage of just trying to use silicone instead of regular rope gasket material?  They have been using rope gasket for ever so if it isn't broke do not fix it.

The issue that I have seen with gassers is air infiltration in the off cycle, this creates creosote, as you probably already know there are more mechanicle controls and flappers on gassers, creosote is the enemy of these controls, We now use silicone coated rope gaskets on all our gassers for that reason, it stops the air leaks, if you cannot find silicone coated gasket to fit your stove you can coat the old rope gasket with silicone ( about 1/8 inch ) then place a strip of wax paper over the silicone and close the door lightly, let the silicone harden then remove the wax paper, if you have 1 inch rope we have the coated gasket available.

Thanks. Is it much better and longer lasting than than normal rope gasket with the silicone applied as you described?

Thanks a ton. This sounds like it will help with those little air leaks when the blower is not going strong.  How long do you let the silicone cure if you put a bead on yourself?  Debating on if I can do that this winter yet, or if I'll have to wait until spring.

This is what I have used, works well, has lasted 5 years for me, I used high temp silicone, came with directions, I did it in off season so the door could be left open while the silicone dried.

I installed one of those from slimjim this fall and it works great. By far a superior upgrade over just the rope gasket. It is like the DVR now I would never go back.

I know it's tempting to buy a similar product to what was originally installed on your boiler, i.e. a replacement rope gasket because it's what you know and it's cheaper...

But, the silicone coated stuff from slimjim is SO far superior to the POS rope gasket - you just won't believe it until you see it.  I'm in my third year operating my P&M 250 and I've already gone through two sets of regular rope gasket and probably 5 or 6 tubes of the high temp silicone just to try and make a positive seal on my doors.  We installed the silicone coated stuff this year and I just shut the door and forget about it.  No tightening every third day, no swearing, no stains from leaks.

Ok, enough gushing.  The stuff just works.

Heck with words of praise like that I should forget about helping Brian sell wood boilers and start my own thing selling rope gasket.

Almost feel like I have to apologize Slim, to you and the siliconized rope! LOL, certainly wasn't trying to put down the product just putting out there what I have used. I think some boilers are harder on the door seal than others.

No problem here Ito, I'm not here to sell rope, I'm here to help run the unit as best we can, the gassers are the ones that really make a difference!
