I have been researching OWBs for a couple years and I am ready to buy.  I have narrowed it down to either Portage and Main Optimizer 250 or CB E1400.  I am a big fan of the gasification concept and currently heat with an indoor wood furnace in my basement; so dry seasoned wood is no issue for me.  I have found a used P&M Optimizer 250 and a used CB E1400 both for sale within 100 miles of my location.  Both used about two seasons, prices and condition are very comparable.  I have a good idea of the known problems with the P&M.  Anybody know of major or reoccuring problems with the E1400 or things I should look out for if I purchase the E1400?

I was in the exact same position as you a year ago, I would elaborate more and weigh in on this but i already got my hand slapped for commenting this board, so I will simply say find a good dealer and make your choice.. but you can see from my info on here what i purchased

From what I understand my e-1450 ia easier to access to clean then the 1400 something you have to do depends how much and what you burn,but my first year with the e1450  heated the last 18 years with a inside wood boiler so not new to heating with one.One thing it doesn't smoke almost at all.I really like the unit I have.

The 1450 has all the latest technology (maybe good, maybe bad...depending on you perspective) and the removal corner panels for easy cleaning.  The E1400 does not have that.  I had inquired with my CB dealer asking if they, CB had a retro kit available to make the corners removable on the E1400 and he said not yet.  That tells me they are maybe working on something.  That being said, I love my E1400.  This is my 3rd year with it and I have had no trouble with it other than the self-imposed problems.  I got lazy and neglected to clean the air holes in the firebox for over a month.  Guess what happens, they clog.  I clean the air holes every 2 weeks and empty reaction at the same time.  It takes me approx. 30 to 40 minutes from start to rekindling the fire.  I do it at 6:00 in the morning so by 7:00am I'm back indoors having a second cup of coffee and have the full day to get other things done.  The only thing that's proprietary on the CB E1400 unit is the electronic controller.  Everything else (Blower, solenoids, replacement cartridges for the Taco pump, etc...) I can get at a good HVAC store in a neighboring town.  I haven't had to change them yet, but I know they have them.  I know nothing of the P&M units other than they sound like a good unit.  I read a lot of praise from people who own them.  But I cannot comment on them due to never having operated one.  Good luck!  Roger

And, the answer in my other post is, yes, I like it.  It beats dishing out over $5,100.00/yr to the oil man.  Roger
