heat exchanger size
« on: April 03, 2014, 06:02:00 PM »

I have a model 200 Mahoning with what ever size HX they sent with it. I believe a 10 plate.  If someone knows what was standard let me know.  Right now I am using a hot water tank in the house and recirculating it to get up to temp and storing since the hot plate wont keep up with hot water.  I am thinking of ditching the tank since it is starting to leak and was wondering what size HX I ought to get.  I have my furnace about 140 feet away from the house so I am sure there is some heat loss.  I'm struggling to think a 20 plate will do it seeing how poorly a 10 plate does, but would a 50 plate be overkill?

Sounds like u have a terrible flow problem

Years ago all I installed was 10 plates for domestic water but I had to accommodate for the restrictive need of the unit by increasing flow via a larger pump

Now we install all 20 plates for domestic hot water and we Def don't recirculation through them, they make endless hot water very easily

Scott, curious as to what size pump your putting on the furnace.  Mine is a 007 TACO.  3/4" plumbing although the hx has 1" ports.  Would changing these alone help?

You have 3/4" pex too? How many feet total? That 007 is undersized for sure with a 10 plate even if the overall pipe length is short.

Turn on a hot water faucet and then feel the boiler line out of the heat exchanger. I am guessing it is not very hot if even very warm.
