Other than the smell, is there any reason I shouldn`t burn old telephone poles in my 6048? Have a guy that can get me as much as I can take. They are paying to get rid of them now.

Not sure I would want my family or neighbors to breathe the smoke from them, they are full of lots of stuff that's not good for you.

Burn good, makes for a horribly stinky fire. The treatment used on them and railroad ties are a known carcinogen.

The older poles were routinely soaked in creosote.  Don't burn them.

   The reason they pay to get rid of them is because there is no safe economical way to dispose of them.  They, along with railway ties are soaked in creosote, pesticides and dioxins.  I would strongly discourage burning them near your home.  Or anywhere for that matter.  You would be better off burning used free furniture and books off craigslist if you are looking for cheap BTU's.

You could cut the good parts out of the poles then sell that for fence posts. Of course then your stuck with the junk.
