ridgewood install indoors?
« on: September 13, 2014, 07:02:47 PM »

Hey guys I think I asked awhile back  what  would be the issue of installing a boiler in my lower garage? I have an upper under garage, I'm thinking to install the boiler In my lower garage. The ceiling and all walls are poured concrete.  I am able to hole saw the concrete floor for the chimney than go up the wall into the upper garage ceiling. That ceiling is drywall through that than out the steel roof. Thanks so much

As you guys know I'm not a fan of OWB's being installed inside, sounds like you have a good application for it though as long as it is fireproof, 4 more considerations for you, 1 wood storage, be sure you keep the area around your unit clean and wood stacked out of the danger area.  2 Smoke while filling, can you vent out the smoke?  3 Make up air, you have to replace the air drawn up the chimney with fresh air, can you do this? 4 Draft, by going into an extended stack or chimney, you have just dramatically increased the draft on your unit, without installing a barometric damper on the unit that extra draft will suck the heat up the chimney faster than the manufacturer intended, you should check with the manufacturer to see what they are looking for on the draft.

Yeah I do agree with not having it in doors, my application would and is very unique to say the least.  I think for this winter I might roll with it indoors  yes it is basically fire proof.  Ceiling walls and floor are all concrete, the door to get into my lower garage is steel.  The draft is a concern to me I do have two small glass block windows that have vents in both of them for some type of make up air. If it's a total headache I will be putting it outdoors for sure next winter.   So just to ask on here since I could never seem to find good answers, how close can a boiler be to a house with out having to extend the chimney over the height of the roof? Thanks guys

There is no true written rule on that one, you have a blower to force draft so now you are in a different category than a wood stove requiring 2 feet above the peak of the roof

No blower, it is a natural draft.  I'm thinking 25 feet away would be ok?

Unless it has an UL rating for indoor use then no way should you put a furnace indoors.

You might want to contact your insurance company and ask if your building will have insurance on it, after you install this boiler indoors, most will void the insurance once they find out there's a wood furnace or boiler installed.    I'd thought about putting a wood boiler and waste oil boiler in a building as a "heating building" everything in one place, feed my house and shop along with a backup system, once I asked the insurance company they told me no.

Ironically any kind of wood heating source would void my insurance, so I called several other companies, they all told me the same thing, even a wood furnace meant to go indoors would void my insurance, but I could make any type of homemade waste oil boiler and it didn't even need to be certified or inspected nor did they care how I hooked up the chimney out of it, there was no guidelines or cares what so ever about it, which made no sense to me at all.

Yeah I talked to my neighbors yesterday and today they told me they don't care if I put my boiler outdoors so I'm rolling with that. I'm thinking about 25 feet from my house at least for this winter.

Good choice.  I really don't see any advantage to having the boiler inside.  It would be nearly twice the work to move your wood around all the time plus I'm sure you would nearly fill your garage with smoke every time you filled the stove.

Did you extend your chimney? Just wondering  I feel good about where I have my stove set in my back yard at the moment, it's about 25 feet from the house

My Boiler is pretty close to the house.. I do have problems in certain winds, will blow the smoke right into two story.. Not fun and smells inside the house
