Where can you buy coal in reasonable amounts in Wisconsin? Preferably northwestern Wisconsin. Feel free to post.

Go to nepacrossroads forum. Google it. Tons of good info over there. Just be prepared to take OWB and wood abuse!  :bag:

Last time I tried finding it was about 5 years ago. The only place I could find it was in the Greenbay area and it was too expensive to be worth it.

I looked into it a bit. Found two places both about 4 hours away. Looks like buying coal costs 2 dollars for every dollar you would spend buying truck loads of logs at $120 a cord.

I think this is the place I had checked with: http://www.kochcarbon.com/Products.aspx
I did ask for pricing delivered by train since I am right on the tracks. I was thinking it was close to wood prices at the time if you figure a ton of coal equivalent to a cord of wood.

Price for truckloads of logs is $80 to $100 per cord down here.

visit http://jeddocoal.net/ and click fuel cost comparison. Then change their wood price to the current going price in your area. They're a coal company so they probably don't have the price of coal too high. It wouldn't look good on the graph below.

Coal prices will vary a lot if there is a mine near by or if it has to be transported several hundred miles.
They show 55% efficient for wood and 75% for coal. Is it really that much different burning in the same stove?

Anyway, as far as coal in Wisconsin, I just tell everyone there is none available here.  ;D

Userdk, If you can buy coal at $250-300 per ton do it . I promise you, you will not be sorry (take it from a guy who sells 200-300 crds per yr) I have 4 ton on hand in my cellar...... 1/3 coal 2/3 wood will almost double your burn times with out the temp swings. My landscape friends think im out of my mind which my be true but the coal thing is mind blowing and also addictive. The only down side to burning coal is it cuts back on PEEKIN in the door. !!! Luke

I seen this site but never went any farther on it,
Alpha Coal Sales Co

12926 County Road D, Lac Du Flambeau, WI 54538
(715) 588-9450

When you just add a few shovels with wood do you still need the shaker grates? I have about 6-8" of a wood coals in mine almost daily so This weekend I will let it go down farther and auger out ashes.

How many less cords of wood do you burn per ton of coal?

Tractor Supply has 40 lb bags of nugget coal on their website for around $5.  My local store was out of stock and unsure if they'll be getting more.

I just checked online and my local store doesn't carry it! Dang! I can get it for around $75 a ton here but I just don't have the time right now to go get it.
