FireStar XP Module
« on: December 30, 2014, 04:03:23 PM »

Looking to install a Firestar XP wall mount module on my e1450.  What is the best cable to use other than buying it directly from Central Boiler?  I think I've seen someone post that Cat5 cable can be used and if so do I have to use the white wires together with the corresponding colored wire to make the connections or is  it okay to just use one of the wires in the Cat5 to make the connection.

Also when hooking up the power supply I assume just a normal indoor electrical wire works to hook up the 120VAC.

Thanks for any advice you can give. Looking forward to getting er hooked up and be able to view remotely.

Thanks,
PapaTango

Thanks...I got it hooked up using a Cat5 direct burial cable and it is working great. Sure is nice to see how it is doing from inside and knowing the best time to go out and re-load.

Thanks for the response.

Im interested in adding one to my e2300, however im not sure if this will bolt on the older units. mine is a 2009 year model.
The boiler is 150' from my living room and I cant see the temp from the couch. love making trips to the boiler for a quick check but its new and that will wear off soon.
has anyone done this in the past? is it doable?

Any one know why these can't be added to a classic? Is there any thing that can send the temp through my home router to my iPhone ? On a classic

I added XP wireless to my 2011 E3200.  Had to change to newer green controller.  Plus add a few wires from controller to air box.  Love it.   I used 15 ft of direct burial cat 5 to connect boiler to wireless controller.  Carries signal and power on the cat 5.  Only used 4 of the wires.  Two for power and two for signal.   Then wireless from there.

Now I know my highest burn temp was 1776 deg.  Hit 1730 last night with the outside temp 5. Now 0 and expecting -17 in two days.

Good stuff, was there a kit for the conversion or did you have to piece it together?

I'll have to call my CB dealer to see if that same setup will work on my E-Classic 1400.  It would be nice to watch the OWB without having to leave the house.  I'm not lazy, I simply like to save energy.   ;)  Roger

They sent me everything I needed with instructions for my XP wireless kit.  I did need a fish tape to run some of the wires in the internal electrical conduit.

I have used the history feature to see how the boiler has been running.  I can go back to last year to compare small changes to tune my boiler.    I Wake up in the morning and I can tell if I need wood now or it can wait till I have coffee.  If traveling I can watch the boiler on my smart phone and text my wife that it is time to fill the boiler.   She don't like filling the boiler if it is burning.  Lots of smoke.  I try to tell her before the boiler start a burn cycle.  Plus I can tell when she filled the boiler.

I have been using the xp wireless since November 2012.

I've had it up and running now for the past week.  This is the icing on the cake for sure.  Got text while at work yesterday that the water temp was dropping below 160. Had to call the wife and tell her to go out and poke the fire, I think the wood was bridging in the fire box.  She asked if I was serious and what she would get in return.  I asked her if she wanted to stay warm with it being 4F outside and she would get warmth in return.  Needless to say she took care of the boiler.  This FireStar XP is awesome and I agree with the other posts that you know when the best time to load is without going outside.

Some of us poor schmucks don't have the option for that upgrade.  I use a camera connected to a dvr security system.  I can easily check water temp on my phone or pc.  There is also an outside camera with the stack in view.  During the day being able to see the smoke or steam coming out tells me a lot about how it is running as well (no help at night though).

If anyone does look into doing this there are only a couple things I can caution about from experience.  My CB temp gauge uses green LED's on the display.  These show up with or without infrared of a night vision camera.  I run my WD HE10000 with a  Johnson A419 controller which I have mounted directly under the CB temp display.  This uses a typical display with black LEDs.  The black LEDs get washed out by the infrared at night.  I get around this problem by using an old camera in which the LEDs no longer work.  I just keep a CFL bulb burning nearby which puts off plenty sufficient light for the camera to see the A419 display.  Works great to be able to see both boiler temps with one camera.

If a DVR system doesn't interest you, there are tons of IP cameras on the market that would work quite well, many are wireless.  Most of us only have a dynamic (changing) IP with our internet service so you might find it necessary to sign up with dyndns.org or another dns provider to make this option effective. Between 2 properties I currently have 6 IP cameras running on dyndns.org.  Service is $25/yr.   Most DVR systems I've seen offer a dedicated dns service.  I've had 2 systems and they have always worked well.

I'd love to have the option to upgrade to the firestar controller with XP wireless.  Knowing the combustions chamber temp would be fantastic.
