Free heat 4 u garage heater opinions
« on: January 29, 2015, 03:19:33 PM »

Still looking at garage heaters,  gone back and forth on several.  Not really interested in building my own.  Just wondering if some folks that bought this heater have any opinions, pro or con.  Looking at the smaller unit, 60k btu, and really like the variable fan speed.  A bit pricey, but would have the rat trap blower which would be quieter.

I went to my local HVAC guy and got an old furnace (1991 Lennox Pulse) with a broken heat exchanger for free. Put a water to air heat exchanger in it and it works great. I did build a hood on it to put my exchanger in.

I hung a car radiator with the 12V fan attached with an inline baseboard thermostat. 12V power supplies are readily available so my total cost was $0.

It is noisier when running but the cost was right! ;D

they use a lot of oil.  i'm thinking of making a waste oil drip into a wood stove to supplement the wood heat.  uses less wood, creates more heat, and gets rid of my waste oil all at once.

I'm using anywhere between 2 quarts an hour up to 5 quarts an hour. At 5 quarts/hour I can supply enough heat for the shop and house.

Depends on whose vehicle, the wife's Jeep Liberty holds five quarts exactly. My Cummins is in the 3 gallon range if I remember right. The semi holds 12 gallons, the big tractor holds 14 gallons. Have 4 Cat 3208's with extended pans those hold 4 gallons each. Have three DT466's on the farm, about 5 gallons each in those.

Then if the transmission oil needs changed in one of the four wheel drive tractors, might as well call up our supplier and have them bring out a 55 gallon drum of oil for the one tractor. Have three of those by the way, can get a hell of a supply of used oil in no time.

Go get a old forced air furnace and put a hx on top of it. I tried a 12x12 modine hanging heater it wasnt enough. It would keep the chil out of garage but it was very slow. With a old furnace it is very quick to warm up garage mine is 30x36.no ceiling just sprayfoamed entire inside.

Just wondering if that blower is going to blow me out of the garage.  1/2 hp motor rated at 1300 cfm, it does have a 3 speed control but no information on what those cfm's are.  Garage is 650 sq ft.  Was hoping a few people had this 60k model?  In the meantime I'll keep my eyes open for a junk furnace.

Bigger is always better. Mine does a good job and is not that noisy. Build a defuser out of tin plywood or whatever to dirict your heat. You could also lay the old furnace onthesid up on a shelf out of the way if your only going to be using the blower hooked to a tstat. I believe you use the green and red to go to tstat. Good luck
