GrappleLoad
« on: January 30, 2015, 10:13:54 AM »

Well, gotta fire up the MS311 soon.  My grapple load of logs finally arrived Wednesday while I was at work..  I have them placed next to an old building that I'll be tearing down in the next couple of years so last spring I had the power company shut off the power to it.  Thankfully I did.  The operator got a bit too close to the power lines leading from the pole to the building; one of the logs snagged one of the wires and pulled all of them out of the building.  He didn't realize it until he was finished unloading the load when he saw them laying on the ground.  I have a call into the power company to please come by and remove them.  I don't need a good Samaritan calling the fire department reporting power lines down.  It looks like a really good load.  It has a good mix of oak, beech, maple, and a couple of small diameter elm.  There's not a spot of rot in any of the logs; all solid.  Roger

Coolidge, MattyNH; My supplier guarantees an 11 cord load but he's always delivered around 12 1/2 to 13 1/2 cord but I pay for the 11 cord.  This year he charged me $1600.00 for that load.  I do not have a pic of it but I'll try to get one today.  Roger

I see wood sell in Ohio for $160.00 a cord. At 12 cords that would be $1920.00. But you still got a lot of work to do cutting and splitting.

What size are the logs?

I just got a load of logs.  9 cords, all maple.  $1100 in case anyone is interested.  No rush to deal with it as it won't be burnt till 2016, or later.  It's a lot of work....for everyone.  I know the fellow who brought me my load and we spoke for a few minutes after the delivery.  He said he had just replaced two tires at $1000/ea, a starter - $500 replaced in the snow at minus 20, brakes completely upgraded $16,000.  Then there is the time and the purchase/upkeep on the equipment to cut and limb the trees and get them to the roadside.
For me, it is worth it - the cost of wood is 25% vs. the cost of fuel oil.

I don't personally buy logs, but I know here in Central Wisconsin loads are $1200 oak, hickory, cherry mixed. The loads consist of truck and pup trailer, usually end up around 11-12 cord. I few years back you could get the same load for $800-$900.

I just got on Craigslist and seen some pretty high prices.  One guy wanted $120 for half a cord. A different guy wanted $385 for two cords. So Roger's price he got looks good to me.

Wow they get that much huh ? Roger so what do they get for a true cord of split hardwood?

In my area of NH (it's an Ivy League College town) I would be paying anywhere around $250.00/cord for green wood; upwards of $300.00/cord for seasoned cut split, split and delivered.

I always look at a load of logs as part of my wellness program.  Who needs to go to the gym to lift weights when one can stay home and get the same benefit but without the cost of gym membership?  My younger brother and I will plug away at it through the summer.  It's not needed until 2016/17 heating season anyway so I'm in no hurry to get it done.  Roger

MattyNH - I once purchased seasoned firewood cut, split and delivered.  I was in a bind and I needed it.  I paid the guy for 5 cord.  I didn't have time when it first arrive to immediately stack it so it sat for over month before I got to it.  It measured out to 3 1/2 cord.  I called the guy and told him he short changed me a cord and 1/2.  He said he would deliver it later that week.  It never showed.  I called the Attorney General's office to see what recourse I had; he said I didn't have a because the time for action had passed.  In NH you have a week from the time of delivery to have a case.  Okay, called neighbors, friends and everyone I knew who burned wood not to buy from the guy; he's a crook.  Fast forward 6 months and someone told me there's a very honest guy who will sell what you want if not more but in log length only.  Okay, I know how run a chainsaw and wood splitter so I called the guy.  After he delivered the load of logs and I cut it, split and stacked it, it came to 12 1/2 cord.  The supplier is the brother of the one who short changed me earlier that year.  He had heard through the grapevine what his brother did and he has always felt so bad about it that he's always delivered more than what I pay for; I think they call it guilt by proxy.  He's been my supplier since then.  Roger

I just got half of mine delivered yesterday, 9 cords of which 90% is hard maple and the rest is beech. He is bringing 9 more cords Tuesday, wood looks great 8" diameter up to a few at 20" that was cut last fall. I paid 120 per cord delivered. I just put my boiler in last year and have been burning oak, ash and wood from my barn that came down as well as heavy oak pallets from work. Be nice to get my woodshed stocked up for next year and be ahead of the game.
