Closed cell insulation
« on: February 20, 2015, 05:54:09 AM »

Hi all, what do you folks know about closed cell expandable insulation?  I hear it's the best stuff on the market but pricey.  Is it worth the investment?  I have a north facing wall, approx. 40 feet long that gets the brunt of the winter winds.  I want to make it as tight as I can.  The house is an 1840's farmhouse.  I'm trying my best to cut down on the drafts on that north facing wall.  Comments?  Concerns?  Please post.  Roger

Rodger I would do it.. It will out way the initial cost that was my biggest mistake I made when building my house $4500 for batt insulation and $16,000 for closed cell I just didn't have it in the budget.. I should found it someware the past 10 yrs I've been doing more insulating to help.. I'm not a pro but have built several homes and additions so I've seen it first hand the differance..

I did my north wall to R 35 with closed cell.    1889 farmhouse, balloon framed. Strapped it with 2x4 and filled it flush.   No drafts anywhere.

Thanks for the replies everyone.  I'll definitely look into it.  Have a great weekend and stay warm.  Oh, we're supposed to get more snow this weekend in my area of NH.  Imagine that, snow in late February early March in New England.   :)  Roger
