Hi, about a week ago I shut down my E-Classic 1400 and I began cleaning it a couple of days ago.  Last night as I was scraping the creosote from the back corners I notice a crack had developed in the rear left hand corner.  It's the welded seam that makes up the air channel, the water jacket has not been compromised.  It's approximately 6 inches long.  I think I'll take the opportunity to call my Central Boiler rep and get an idea how much they charge for the removable panels that make up the air channel.  I might as well get the panels and have a pro install them so I no longer have to struggle cleaning the primary air holes.  I'll keep you posted as to how it goes.

That a picture of the crack in the firebox of my E-Classic 1400.  Thankfully the water jacket wasn't compromised.  I'm still waiting to hear back CB whether they will pay a professional welder to weld the thing for me.

The following is the response I received from Central Boiler after I submitted a picture of the crack earlier today.

"This crack will not effect the operation of furnace. I will make a note on the furnace history file that it was reported,  it is not urgent to weld this".

I don't know.  I don't like the idea of the crack being that close to the water jacket.  I'll definitely keep an eye on it next heat season.  Do you think it would be prudent to drill a small hole at the top of the crack to prevent it from opening further?   Roger

Wow, I wouldn't leave something like that, wish I was closer I would weld it for you.
Some of the welds in that picture don't look promising.

Slimjim, I didn't ask about drilling a small hole.  It never occurred to me until later in the evening.  I'll send another message when I have time, perhaps sometime tomorrow.  I think I'll go ahead and get an estimate anyway and at the same time have him/her look over the welds and include any touch ups in the estimate if they are needed.  Roger

Why don't you try to PM Big wood, he has refurbished a few of the CBs air channels I think?

Regardless of what day of the week it is, I'm usually out of bed around 3:30am.  For some reason my internal clock wakes me at 3:30 so I get up and get the day started.  But, I must admit I overslept this morning.  I woke at 4:00am, the day is nearly over.

My thoughts exactly, part of it looks more like an improper weld more than a crack as in the bead penetrated one piece of steel but not the other.

I'm curious, are they located along the weld bead or elsewhere?  I hope to have time tomorrow to call a welder I know (we went to high school together) and see what he has to offer.  Perhaps I can get him to fabricate a removable panel for me.  Roger
