Electrical issues
« on: August 07, 2015, 06:41:33 PM »

So I at wits end on my truck electrical. First of its a Chevy Duramax 07( I know the big debate over Ford Dodge and Chevy) but I keep blowing my right turn signal fuse for my trailer even when trailer is totally unhooked. Traced wires in harness, replaced all bulbs, hooked up new ground, tested every pin on connected I get the same thing, blown fuse. I hate the thought of buying a 70,000 dollar truck.

Oh boy, just to keep myself from getting in trouble for saying that you should have bought a ford, I won't say it! Have you checked to see if perhaps the plug may be shorting across itself to a ground?

Hi Coolidge, I had an 04 3500 Duramax that had a problem with blinker and brake lights, but it wasn't all the time. It turned out to be the main block for the the fuses.  I think it was around $350 to fix. Hope this helps.

I think I found the problem, between the cab and bed( in a nice convenient spot) there are two ground wires, one was broke. As far as we could tell neither one goes to the trailer plug, but if it works run with it.

ATV, you may have a resistor (dumby load) gone on that signal.  Depending on the bulb it may not draw enough so the truck thinks the bulb is gone.  I just replaced both on my work truck this past weekend.  Hope this helps.

Does it blow fuse only when the blinker is activated or does it blow when you step on the brakes or both? Or does it blow with neither circuit activated? Depending on the situation, it might help narrowing down what wiring to chase. I would bet there is a wire skinned in a harness somewhere, more than likely under the bed between the rear lamp and the trailer plug.

Have one myself to fix, coming home the other night wit the straight truck full of hay and the loader on the trailer behind it, circuit breaker popped and clearance lights went out, came back on then did it again. Pulled over and looked for al the usual culprits, didn’t find anything, didn’t do it again either, drove the last four miles home, couple hundred feet from the main drive at the farm lights dimmed and smoke started coming out from under the dash (goody) apparently the breaker stuck in the on position.

Smoke can be a good thing in the right situation. It's like a signal fire. I can't begin to count how many times I've found shorted wires that way over the years of working on industrial controls. Management gets all nervous when you tell them you saw smoke. I makes my day. However, smoke rolling out of the dash while going down the road, less than ideal......
