Sequoyah furnace company refusing to honor waranties!
« on: January 06, 2011, 01:15:11 PM »

We purchased a whole house wood furnace almost 2 years ago. The first three years was supposed to cover 100 percent of any problems related to a manufacturers defects or workmanship. It is a limited warranty. The company was sold in the interim and now the new owner is refusing to honor any warranties. The warranty was part of the furnace purchase and not purchased separately.

We had a major breakdown in the furnace leaving us with no heat, except for an old oil furnace which is quickly running out of oil. The new owner says we must pay for the repairs and he will decide whether or not to consider reimbursing us for the claim on the furnace . I contacted a consumer law attorney online with the question and he said, "yes you can sue".

I wanted EVERYONE to know that the new owner of the for Sequoyah furnace company,Matt Cobra,  is refusing to honor any warranties for furnaces purchased BEFORE he took ownership. Lawsuits are being filed as we speak.

Do not sell these furnaces without informing customers. I am going to do my damnedest to make sure everyone in the freaken country knows that buying a furnace from this company is NOT a good idea!

PLEASE PASS THIS ON!!!!!!

What is the name of the company Sequoyah was sold to? I remember them being sold but I forget what brand bought them out.

I to have a Sequoyah E3400.  Installed and fired up in Oct. 2009.  My father purchased and installed one at the same time.  I have had to replace the damper solenoid 5 times, we have had a new damper assembly installed, and 1 circulator pump replaced.  We have had to purchase 4 of the solenoids, as the dealer has washed his hands of the situation.  He told me to contact the company as he was at a lose as to why the solenoids were burning up and could not continue to pay to replace them.  My father has replaced the solenoid 3 times.
Creosote is the problem.  It causes the damper gate to stick in the closed position and when the solenoid can not open, it burns it up.  We have installed an in-line fuse (4a) and thought that would at least save the solenoid, but tonight I went out to find the blower on and solenoid in the closed position.  Fuse was blown.  Replaced fuse, which immediately blew again.  I guess I need to try a smaller fuse.  It is sad to say, but the Sequoyah is completely unreliable.  I have no faith that it will operate as it is supposed to.  At ~$28 a piece, replacing solenoids is getting expensive and eating into all my savings from "free" wood heat.  I have tried anti-creosote products with no obvious success.  I have burned wood for 25 years, I get that creosote is a by-product.  But, this seems to be some kind of design flaw and there is not much support.  I called Sequoyah before Christmas, got transferred to Royall Manufacturing, that gentleman didn't know anything, didn't want to know anything, transferred me back to Sequoyah.  Ended up talking with Leo, who blamed the dealers for not following thorough, offered to send me 1 solenoid and here we are.  I am at a lose as to how to proceed.  Have too much invested to quit now, but have no confidence in this design or company.  Sorry for the long post, just a lot to say.

depends on the purchase contract, i have seen them exclude warranty on prior product, not saying thats ok just that it is possible. happened to me with decking we sold.  the new company that took over was not liable for prior sales per contract .  i tested it in court and lost. hope its not the same way.

I have been using my E3400 for 3 years. I burn for 6 Months none stop. I have not had any solenoid problems or build up of creosote in the air chamber. I did have to replace the temperature controller this fall. I bought an extra to keep on hand. They are not really rated for the extreme temperatures of the winter or summer.

Question: What boiler treatment are you using now that we can't by it from Sequoyah and how often do you add it?

I was a dealer for those stoves.  Please try and raise the back of the stove about 1 1/2" to make it so the creosote does not run to the damper when stove is at idle.  This should minimize your trouble.  I doubt it will solve it all but it will help.  There are so many factors to consider.  The new style damper assembly comes at an angle so nothing can run up hill towards the damper.  Hope that helps.  P.S.  Keep all air ports and exhaust clean to reduce air pressure.

I wouldn't think that a company would honor warranties after it closed and reopened under another name and owner.

If sequoyah furnace is now royall furnace, are these the same furnaces? Also is "american royal furnace ' aka royall furnace, too? Just trying to put 2 and 2 together because there is an american royal furnace dealership in my area that i have heard nightmares about.
