Damper door motor buzzing
« on: October 25, 2015, 08:02:10 PM »

Went out Sat am and the damper motor was buzzing loudly when the damper was open. Took the cover off and lubed it but it closed and hasn't opened all weekend when I was around.  Anybody have this happen? What was the remedy?

Damper motor? or solenoid?

If it’s a solenoid they will buzz sometimes at the pitch of 60 hertz. 50 hertz in some other countries.

Ones on my homemade have buzzed for about 12 years now, other than being annoying not unusual for a solenoid to buzz.

Mine buzzes all of the time. Sometimes a good whack on the side of the damper cover will make it stop.  Other times if it is really annoying, I flip the power off for a second and back on again.  One of the two methods usually works.

Yes it is the solenoid and it has never buzzed.  It was so loud that you could plainly hear it from over 100'.  Just wondered if it was going bad.

Spray some wd 40 on  the solenoid , that will take care of the humming noise!

some buzz from the day they are put in service, some not. sometimes a shim or part of a guide will fall out and the buzzing becomes louder, it could be nothing but if I had one that never buzzed before and all of a sudden did, I would be ordering a spare if i didn't already have one.

Try tightening up the cotter pin a bit.

I've found when there is loud buzzing coming from the solenoid area, remove the louver and just give the cotter pin that connects the bottom of solenoid plunger to the damper tab a 1/4 turn. Almost always makes it quit buzzing. Solenoids hum when charged causing some vibration at this point. If tab hole or plunger hole that cotter pin runs through has enough play or slop in it, the solenoid hum will cause a metal vibration at that point which can be loud and annoying. Turning the cotter pin usually resolves.

Thanks all.  I sprayed everything down with silicone spray and now all is quiet.
