outdoor furnace shutdown for summer
« on: May 21, 2011, 07:20:48 AM »

I have a central boiler outdoor wood furnace.
I have cleaned out the fire box and coated it with oil for summer shutdown. Should the circulating pump be turned off or left on. Any tips would be appreciated.  Thanks Much,  Augster

I turn off my pumps and the power to the stove.  I also cover the smokestack with a bucket.

I pulled the fuse and put the circulating pump on a timer. I have a chimney cap, so no need for bucket.

What about corrosion?  Is there any benefit to leaving the pump circulating?

What kind of oil did you coat the inside with?
I shut mine down about 10 days ago.  My circulator pump is on a timer and running about six hours a day.  I took out the fuse and left the power on.  My chimney is covered.  I still have some ash dust in my chamber and some creosote on the sides and bottom of my water tank.

I used a full quart of 10w30.  I keep a paint brush hung up in the woodshed for this purpose.
