Installing an outdoor furnace in a outdoor shed
« on: June 13, 2011, 06:54:55 PM »

Hello everyone. New on here and just purchased my 1st outdoor furnace I will be installing in the fall. I live in rural central PA. My question is does anyone have their furnace installed in an outdoor building? I want to put mine in an outdoor shed so its convenient in the winter time. The shed is about 15' x 15' with pretty high ceilings and cracks between the boards so Im not concerened about smoke. I am concerened about it being a fire hazard. Since it is only 13' from my house I wanted to get other peoples opinions on this. I plan to be very cautious and run the smoke stack straight up through the roof. Is it a bad idea to put these in a building?

i won't tell you it is legal or not but i did it with my home made stove. my shed is 250 feet from my house but only about 20 feet from a double garage (work shop) i ran my stack right through the ceiling but it is an 8 inch schedule 40 pipe surounded with 1200 degree pipe insulation. i thas been sitting in there for 11 winters and i sleep good at night

What is the reason you want to put it inside? A lot of people do it. A some of them regret it later, some like it. (I know some both ways)
If you don't have any other inside storage for wood then you will wish it isn't in there using up all the space. Also, it is somewhat a fire hazard.
If you want it hidden so people don't bother you about having an outdoor wood burner then it is probably best to put it inside.
What brand did you get?

I think the fire hazzard depends on what stove and what material roof as far as sparks from the pipe. Inside it depends on the floor and how much sparks out when the door is open. I plan on building a 12' X 12' metal roof over mine and then I may or may not add some walls, time will tell. Good luck!

Friend of mine has his in his pole shed with a metal roof..Wood is stacked inside pole shed as well..Def is nice not having to deal with traps, snow etc..I don't see a fire risk since his stack goes straight up through the roof..If your worried about it catching fire..You have the option to install a spark arrestor...

Thanks everyone. The shed does have a standing seam metal roof and I do plan on running the pipe up through the roof. I purchased a mahoning furncace from my local dealer. I got alot of positive feedback on the dealer and stove from people in my area who have them. Hopefully it works out good.
