General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: leaking out the overflow
« on: November 30, 2015, 04:46:17 PM »
No well, just spring fed and has a manual fill with a ball valve. I shut off the ball valve that feeds for domestic meaning all valves are shut that are plumbed to the furnace. Came back after hunting for about 4 hours and it still is trickling out. I'm baffled. If it's not getting water it would dry up soon but how is it coming from the overflow?

How would you figure out that's where the leak is?

My overflow is continuously running. Where could all the extra water be coming from. I have a water line plumbed to feed it when it gets low with a ball valve and just checked the ball valve and it is still good. The only other place I can think of is the plate exchanger. Is it possible my potable water is blowing through a hole and filling up the boiler? My hot water at the spigot is still clear with no sign of it mixed with nasty furnace water. Any other place I may be missing or do you all think this is where it's at. System is about 10 years old.

Scott, curious as to what size pump your putting on the furnace. Mine is a 007 TACO. 3/4" plumbing although the hx has 1" ports. Would changing these alone help?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / heat exchanger size
« on: April 03, 2014, 06:02:00 PM »
I have a model 200 Mahoning with what ever size HX they sent with it. I believe a 10 plate. If someone knows what was standard let me know. Right now I am using a hot water tank in the house and recirculating it to get up to temp and storing since the hot plate wont keep up with hot water. I am thinking of ditching the tank since it is starting to leak and was wondering what size HX I ought to get. I have my furnace about 140 feet away from the house so I am sure there is some heat loss. I'm struggling to think a 20 plate will do it seeing how poorly a 10 plate does, but would a 50 plate be overkill?

Anyone using hot water straight from the heat exchanger without running it through a couple of times to bring it up to temp with a tank? If so what size? I just tried it and we have luke warm water, not HOT like I like it.

Ignorant to the anode rods. Where are they and how often do you replace them?

They only seem to last for about 8 years at the most. Hate to put one in just to replace it in a year or two.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Hot water storage tank

Does anyone here use a storage tank for thier domestic hot water? Currently i am using a hot water heater and it is beginning to leak. I have no need of the elements and such, I simply need an insulated tank. I would think just a tank would be cheaper and last a little longer. Any thoughts and if so where are you getting them.
