h4 went out???
« on: November 03, 2012, 08:18:53 AM »

I have been using my h4 for about 45 days here in ohio it has been down in the 30s at night and low 40s in the day well this morning I woke up from being cold furnace blower on so I went outside and the blower was in but no flame I had to relight it at 2am. I have not had any issues so far just wondering why it would go out after so long with cooler weather I am burning pine maple and cherry right now and have been doing so since the start. You guys have any opinions on why this would happen

Sounds like the fire burnt itself a hole and the wood didn't "fall "in..Wood was hung up..

You want to leave some of the coals in the ash pan.  When the blower kicks on it will turn the caols bright red and create a lot of heat to get the fire going again.  Is your wood seasoned really well?  I can burn some wet stuff in mine but only if there is a high heat demand on the stove.  The wet stuff will tend to go out.

I haven't burnt a lot of pine so I'm not really familiar with how it burns.  I split a lot of my wood to about 6-8" around.  When it gets cold, if it fits in the door I will burn it.  I will always put some smaller logs around the big one though.

I don't know a whole lot about the H4's but just out of curiosity, do you have the holes on the flat steel that covers your blower?  The one that the solenoid lifts up when your blower kicks on?  Mine has two holes on it, one has a screw in it to regulate the air that goes into the boiler when the blower isn't running.  Is one of the holes open?

I have had the same problem. I splite some  dry wood I have very small to built up some coals, and I took 2 of the screws out to give it more air at idle. I also bought a cap for the chiminey at rural king to keep the rain out.

Well I woke up to a cool house this morning I figure its cause I am burning pine only. If I take the second screw out if the blower cover plate will my wood usage increase or not the lows at night have been in the low to mid 20s this is third time this has happened in roughly 60 days is it from burning pine as it doesn't leave many coals or not enough air on down time

I would think that your wood usage would go up if you took the other screw out.  Does your pump run 24/7 or do you have it hooked up to only come on when the house calls for heat?  Is your house insulated really well?   I would think that with the temps being in the 20's that you would have plenty of heat load and that you wouldnt have any issues with the fire going out.  I have never burned pine in mine so I don't know how it burns.  You might try mixing it with some over hard woods.  Is it seasoned well?  I can burn wet hard wood in mine and it doesn't go out so I'm thinking it is from the Pine.
