It means I would check with my local authorities and see if there are regulations that you need to know regarding EPA rules.  A company can claim anything but it's your state and local regs that have the final say.  Plus, it's cheaper to play it safe than buy something that you're not allowed to have.  Roger

If this help here's what I know. I've been wanting the earth mountain man 500 for a couple years and it wasn't EPA phase 2 compliant so I had a few issues with my zoning officials. I've done research and the info I've found on Shaver's web site helped me get the earth mountain man 500. If you purchase a furnace with grates and a ash pan it can be used for coal and there are no EPA emissions on a coal burner in Pennsylvania and if the burner is over 300,000 btu's that also makes it exempt of state laws also. So thanks to Shaver and their website and the research I've done I got the OWF I've been wanting and it works great!!! I've also learned a lot off this site and the outdoorwoodboiler.com site also. A lot of people here are on that site also. It's a grate community and they make you feel like family. I hope this helps you out and if you have more questions I'm sure someone will be gladly to help out, that's why I check these sites out daily, there's always good info and great knowledge.

Well since your already installed..Your grandfathered..Ive been grandfathered for the last few yrs....What Ive been told though, like scarface18071 said..Coal is in a different category..Like my Aqua Therm dealer cant sell  outdoor wood boiler due to it hasn't met epa phase 2..But the coal ones are in the process of being able to be sold..Not sure why..I think coal is dirtier..

Shaver also claims they have gasifiers that are 80% efficient to get those tax credits a few years ago, remember that?

If a unit is over 350k or so btu, it can be considered commercial and not under EPA regs, but most hardys are well under that

That's the only exemption on the books

The EPA law in MA covers all the fuel types about 5 or so years ago it did not, so you could get a pellet unit and it did not apply, but the current law defines what it does not the fuel type to cover all the units

The next ban will be nationwide, it won't affect units you already have.

After the gun battle you'll hear the war drums fire up for the "carbon tax" and things of that nature and EPA phase 3

I think it will be to the point where hardly anything will pass.  I know one company already working to meet phase 3, inside sources on what it will be I guess

There will be a lot of crazy things happen when all that happens anyway..  You'll start hearing more and more about "carbon taxes" after the gun battle winds down.  There is some crazy legislation coming up with stuff like being taxed by the mile you drive and other silly stuff, the crazy part is what's gonna happen to electric rates..  There gonna sky rocket.   Mark my word on that

Here in ohio utility's are going de regulated to keep costs low. It's kind of scary since all of this clean air laws. I have a question Scott how can they ban what we have but not the commercial size ones? Doesn't make sense to me I took a video of my hardy running vs my neighbors wood stove and yesterday when it was really cold they looked the same I had just loaded mine up and blower kicked on will they go after indoor stoves to?
