Set-Back Recommendations
« on: February 25, 2013, 02:38:27 PM »

After searching around this site, consulting with my insurance agent, and exploring an installation manual, I have not been able to come up with any solid recommendations for good set-back distances for the OWB from a house.  Insurance agent said what ever the manual says.  Manual says keep 36" away from anything flammable.  Nothing very specific on how far away from the house to locate the boiler.

It is shaping up for the best place to locate my boiler is directly behind my semi-detached garage.  Close enough that my return/supply lines will go from the back of the boiler directly through the wall into my garage without having to be burried.  I have a slab floor and coming up from the gound is not feasible.  My plan is an insulated connection on the exterior of the wall via the method that has been shown on this site a couple times before in other threads.

Any thoughts?

There isn't a set answer I don't think.  Most books will say 36" from a flammable surface or something like that, I would likely just set it out from your shop 6' or so to give plenty of room to access the back of the stove comfortably.  I wouldn't be worried about it hurting anything, if I were that close though I'd def extend my chimney up some though

I've never seen a building inspector in my area but just go with whatever the manufacturer says is ok....

Make sure it's listed for insurance purposes

That's true, but at the same time, if I were sitting it within 4 feet of a building, I'd hate to give a lawyer a toe hold

Let me make it clearer, I wouldn't worry if it was out in the yard, but sitting it so close if wanna make sure i was covered, in 99% of owb installs, a ul listing is worthless to me

My insurance company required 10' clearance from the house.

Since mine is an air furnace I wanted to stay as close as possible.

No UL listing since it was homemade.

My insurance was 25ft or pay more, gives smoke close to enough time to get up, have another piece of pipe to go on once i get it braced.  If go close plan on adding some extra pipe to it.

When I was thinking of installing the OWB, I called my local zone enforcement officer and inquired regarding town local zoning law.  He said they go by manu. recommendations.  I called my CB dealer who said between 20 and 30 feet from the nearest structure which happened to be my house, so I set it back 25 feet.  So, if ever you're in Enfield, NH...you now know the rest of the story.  Roger
