Automatic vent valves
« on: December 09, 2013, 08:33:27 PM »

Since I seem to have allot of issues with air in my baseboard lines would it be worth getting some automatic vent valves for each baseboard at each bleeder location? I also have a radiator in the basement that is tied into the first floor loop that Im sure holds a big pocket of air, thought about getting one for that to. Maybe this will solve my problem of my house not getting the proper heat... Thoughts on them?

Why do you seem to be picking up so much air Dave? Has the system been properly bled of air?

I've been watching Dave's issue closely as I am having similair issues.  I can't seem to get any kind of consistant heat to my 2nd level.  I can only find 1 bleeder valve on my whole 2nd story.  I've bled the air and it still does not work.  It's almose like the valve is not opening to let water up thru the pipe.  It's been super cold here in MN and my 2nd level gets down to 60 degrees.  The entire main level works great and stays close to where the t stat is set unless its -20.  At that point there is a definite drop cause it can't keep up with my drafy old house...  I'm sure I have some major air in the 2nd level and I'm about ready to call a pro to have them bleed the entire system...  I'm right there with you Dave...  frustrating....

OK, I'm going to try and explain to both of you how to purge the air out of the system. first shut off supply and return for all zones in the house, kill all power to the system by pulling the firematic plug that should be directly above the burner itself. once you have done this grab a garden hose and attatch it to a return on the manifold, find the corrisponding supply off the boiler and open that valve, find the auto water feeder that supplies make up water to the oil boiler and the pressure/ temp guage, open the valve up by pulling the handle straight out, you should hear water feeding into the boiler, bring the pressure up to 25 pounds and then open up the drain that is attatched to the garden hose, you should hear the water going through the piping and it will carry the air with it right out the garden hose, keep more than 20 pounds of pressure on the boiler during this process by crimping off the hose as the pressure drops, you will hear and feel the air come through the garden hose, when you have gotten rid of the air in that loop close it off and do the same to all the rest of the zones ONE AT A TIME, when you have purged them all bring the pressure back down to 12-14 pounds and refire the boiler, open all zone/loop valves and you are done.
