My 5036 appears to burning a lot of wood at night
« on: January 25, 2014, 05:36:30 AM »

This is the first year that Ive had the boiler burn completely out overnight, that Ive had to reload/relight it in the morning we have had a lot of cold morning's 5 and 6 degree's which might be my problem. I think my wood that I have might be getting overly seasoned burning up very quickly. Im going to try to find some greener wood to mix in with my very dry wood. :-\

Im heating a 2300 sq ft house and also my hot water, have thermostat set at 73 degree's I loaded the boiler last night a little different than I have been I put wood in vertically in front of the load of wood that I would normally have. It was 20 outside this morning verses 17 degrees the day before but I still had some wood left and the house was still 73 degree's I dont know if it was because of the little extra wood that I placed vertically or the slightly higher outside temp. Ill update later this week when we get our next cold wave to come through. :)

Here is a thought to consider. I have been having trouble also and I think mine are more the thermostat (see other thread) but last couple days I have tried something. My  5036 faces south .we have had really cold single didget temps and high winds almost non stop. I started leaning the wheelbarrow standing up to shield the door and it seems to have helped a lot. I think its just pushing my heat right out the chimney.

Poplar does not last very long.  I burn it during the day and save the oak for night burning. You might try that.

I second patton acres reply with the wheelbarrow idea, works great for me reguardless of wind direction, if its windy i am in the habit of putting it against the door, but as they said wood quality is very important, I'll burn what cottonwood, poplar, and junk i have on the warm days and the ash, oak, and maple for the -40 deg. windchill nights and days,i get longer burns and bad azz coal beds! just what works for me?! keep tryin diffrent things good luck!

Its been cold for sure. How long are you cutting your logs? First couple of years I cut mine 30/36 ". Over the last few yares Ive been cutting the logs 18/20" and it seems to burn longer.I think it keeps the flame on the inside of the baffle at the back of the fire box.
Hey Fireboss,I have a blower and put a switch on it and hardly ever use it. In the bottom of the cover I drilled 5 1" holes so I could use it as needed. Did you ever use the furnace without the blower?
Im interested in knowing what kind and how seasoned is the wood your using with the fan.Ive found that beech and maple burn great if cut and seasoned for 3/6 months.I cut it about 20' and just crack it with a small electric wood splitter.
