30 plate bell & Gossett heat plate big enough
« on: February 03, 2015, 06:21:39 AM »

Guys,

I bought a 30 plate bell & gossett heat exchanger for my domestic hot water. rated at 40,000 BTU. Is this big enough for an average sized house. Will it fill a whirlpool tub sufficiently?

As much as number of plates overall size also plays a large part. Is it a 5" x 12" or is it a smaller size physically?

oh crap!!!! it's a 10 plate, B&G 400-10, dimensions are 3.1 wide and 8.2 tall. Honestly, am i screwed? If this thing will not fill up a decent sized whirlpool tub I am dead. other recommendations? Also, best place to buy?

I use a side arm now .
You can use the 10 plate and plumb it into a side arm and have both going, that will work .

Problem with 10 plates is they restrict the boiler water flow way too much. You can sometimes get by with them if you use a much larger pump than you should need but if you already need a large pump then you are out of luck.

It is only $150 for a 5x13 20 plate that is made in USA. I don't see the point in trying to use something smaller.

I totally agree with RSI on this one, why bother with something that you already know is marginal?

I have the 20 plate that RSI is referring to. It works great, endless hot water. I put a bypass before it and installed boiler valves below the bypass so I can back flush the exchanger with a garden hose without taking it out.

Get yourself some combo units from supply house, can be had in sweat or threaded, units with a union built right in can also be had. By time you buy a couple separate valves, a tee, hose bib, etc it's hard to beat the price on them.

These valves maybe a tad more than other, but they save a TON of space

Garden hose or if your using a puddle pump use a washing machine hose as it will already have two female garden hose ends
